And after you watch the first two or three, you learn to never watch the new video. The comments help to keep the curiosity from getting the better of me. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

See the last post (Posted: Thu Apr 07, 2016 1:28 pm) on the first page of the following topic thread about my 1973 VW 1600 Type 2 Westfalia Continental campervan, which outlines when I was obliged to perform a rolling start downhill in reverse gear, during our 1982 summer holiday in Sweden, when the battery was becoming heavily discharged owing to a burned-out dynamo's voltage regulator; running on dipped headlamps during the day, as per Swedish motoring law at the time.

I've roll started my buses, both forward and reverse, several times with no issues. It's all in the way you let the clutch out. Yeah, quickly releasing the clutch pedal is probably not good for the transmission or the engine. I let it out slowly so there's no sudden slamming contact on any of the parts. |
I let the van accelerate in reverse under gravity, until the speed reached about 10+ mph, before letting the clutch out slowly to progressively spin the engine up to starting speed. It started at the first attempt so I declutched, braked to a halt, changed into 1st gear and resumed my journey with the headlamps switched off. _________________ Regards.

Did the 1972 model come with that option? I don't think mine has it. _________________ Brutis Patches Izabich: 1970 VW Transporter - 1776cc DP

There should be a diagram on the front of the ashtray, above the hand-brake handle, showing one how to engage reverse gear.
My 1973 VW "1600" Type 2 (manufactured in circa August or September 1972) doesn't have an ashtray there (smoking is verboten in my vehicles!), but has a switch panel instead, incorporating six Citroen Visa push-button switches, which are much more useful to me. _________________ Regards.

Right, the 1971 video is up, but I need the 1972
Nigel - I found getting on one knee and asking works for all the other gears, but engaging reverse hasn't worked so far. _________________ .ssS! |

you post enough of these types of videos that you might want to consider getting a handheld support for the camera/phone... your video quality will immensely improve. |
And please, enable 'screen rotation' and turn the camera sideways. These straight up and down videos are like looking through a keyhole. A better solution which would avoid push-starting or roll-starting, is to have a retro-fitted starting-handle facility as was available for some split-screen VW Type 2s. This is something we retro-fitted after our Swedish experiences. _________________ Regards.

there was a pull start, kindof like a lawnmower pull start on older beetles, the pulley had a funky notch on it? it was an aftermarket deal though

We had this on our 1966. It was our only family car for two years while Dad scoured junkyards for an old Ford transmission to fix his Faurlane
It shuffled all of us to school and events and mom and Dad to University’s in the Sixties and Seventies. I got tear gassed at University Buffalo in it.
Couple of cold Buffalo winters that strap got us started. _________________ .ssS! |
