.. maybe not - the tariffs are on designated items from China and elsewhere. The tit for tat tariffs will impact us all for a while, until our deficit is reduced or when we cry uncle.

We raised the tariffs on Chinese washing machines, which allowed USA Whirlpool etc to jack up their prices too! ALL washing machines are higher priced now thanks to tariffs!

So a tariff might save a VW from being subjected to another POS part?

No, you're just going to pay more for the same POS part, or pay the same as you do now for an even worse one.

This is true. We've lost all those manufacturing jobs to overseas or Mexico. However, as a country we are sitting at a 3.8% unemployment rate. Where I live in PHX, the unemployment rate is in the low 3's. I've tried to hire folks for months and can't find anyone.

A lot of those factory jobs were also lost to automation too. I'm not advocating that it's ok to send our jobs out of the country but rather, I'm pointing out that we don't really have an abundance of unemployed looking for factory jobs either.

Back on point- EMPI tariffs won't effect most folks who avoid the poorly made, junky Chinese parts.

Eh, the unemployment #s are skewed by the previous administration. THe way that the "unemployment" numbers were kept artificially low was that they changed the wording to "first time unemployment" & then the Fed was rolling low skilled, unemployed workers into disability. Now that they are on the federal tit, they're not going to give up on their benefits to fight in the low wage sector.

Don't worry, EMPI will continue their business model of making their sh!t cheaper. I'm touched that the OP is worried about 'em.

The people that buy cheap shit deserve to be taken advantage of, trouble is it hurts the market as a whole and drives out honest sellers of quality products as they cannot compete. Same type would use a glory hole not caring what was on the other side long as it’s warm and wet. Very Happy

Wait. People actually pay money to put Empi parts on their cars? Strange.

Anywho, back to ordering stuff from CB Performance.

... not a Chinese Empi parts fan, but at the same time, I have nothing against them... the product fills a void - for those that don't know the difference, don't care or don't have a lotta' dough.

I'd bet Empi products are not on the tariff list... China wants to impact our wallet, because we're doing the same to them and justifiably so. Our trade deficit with them is out of control...They might be better players, than we are... just wish the current administration had a better plan.

... better days will come and we'll stop this silly trade war BS... George Bush imposed a tariff on steel and aluminum and then rescinded it pretty fast - hope that happens again.

They have been capitalizing on our cheapness for ten years. So much that they even flooded the world market with cheap steel and iron goods.

This is hurting us. I'm a machinist.
We hardly ever turn brake rotors anymore. It is cheaper to scrap a brake rotor, put it on a boat to china, they melt it down and cast it into a new brake rotor, and ship it back.
Not only does that use 20X the fuel as compared to just machining the brake rotor, is maybe a concern.....for you tree huggers. But the bigger problem IMo is that they are just not as good as the originals were.
I have two guys, one a respected honda machanic. the other a respected toyota specialist, still bringing in brake rotors. They are not doing this to save the planet. They use only OE parts. i am sure you understand why.

Paying more will not improve quality, but it will make quality more price competitive. Used car dealers and mechanics and china don't really give a crap about you, only your dollars. So, a tariff isn't the ideal solution, but it is "a solution". nor do i think the solution is lawyers and laws. The problem is greed. The problem is too much greed, and not enough pride

The trick , my brotha, is not to be on the 'warm and wet' side. Just sayin'.....

Exactly, and China has capitalized on that, they have slowly and quietly been taking over the world by undercutting nearly every product so competing factories shut down or downscale to a point that they can't possibly keep up to demand if they were suddenly the only game in town. They have us by the short and curlies.
Even those OEM rotors and other consumables are not immune, Nissan now offers a line of supposedly "factory approved" Chinese made parts like driveshafts and brake parts at ~1/3 the price of the real deal, unfortunately the availability of cheap jobber parts has made the real deal parts rediculously expensive due to low demand.

Do tarrifs solve the problem?, not likely, steel (and washing machines) went up in anticipation of them, do the profits trickle down to the guy in the hardhat making it?, or are the shareholders the benefactors?. I guess it trickles down eventually if the shareholders spend more on other goods and stimulate the economy, but in the short term the consumer is the one who will pay. Tarrifs may have helped 20+ years ago, now it's like closing the barn door after the horse is gone.

As for EMPI products, it won't effect me one little bit Wink

Hopefully this will price out of our market the cheap people who buy the cheap Chinese parts......maybe more VWs will go without this cheap junk installed on them. Hey, buy a used Honda...it has more stock hp than any VW with the add on crap from China!

When the prices of the cheap Chinese shit rises, there will not be any return of good quality USA products. All there will be is expensive Chinese shit.
