Forgive me if there is a sticky or a thread that I have overlooked but I could not find this issue discussed. Per the photo, I can’t get the roller bearing inner race to move all the way up the stub axle. You can see where it stops. This is on my 73 SB, I pulled the axle out, replaced the inner ball bearings and seal and then went to put on a new roller bearing on the outside. The roller's inside race just won’t go any further. Did I damage the axle somehow or am I just plain missing something?
Thanks.

It could be an undersize (Chinese?) inner race or a slight burr or a ding on the spline. Look and feel around for such.

If found, I would then hit it lightly with a Dremel to clean it up.

Thank you, Goober for your suggestion. Mystery solved. DON'T DO THIS TO YOUR AXLE! While working on the CV bolts, I had the brilliant idea of reversing the brake drum on the axle to make it easy to turn the axle and also to give me something really easy to grip. BAD IDEA. At the point where the drum collar was resting on the axle, the weight of the drum created a deformity on the axle surface and since I was turning it little by little, I messed it up all the way around.

Took a while to figure out why I could not get this race on. It was a FAG bearing, so I had confidence it was the right size. And I had taken one off, so it had to have happened during my work. Then it came to me. Emory cloth and careful filing did not solve it -- it would have taken much more than a light touch. Fortunately, I had a stub I could canibalize from a parts car.

NEW RULE: NEVER REVERSE THE DRUM ON YOUR AXLE.
