I was doing some research on adjustable spring plates for my 67 bug. In one video, the guy's spring plate covers had grease fittings in them. I can't decide if this is a good idea, or worthless.

Pros:

I can grease my outer spring plate bushing without taking the cover off.
Eliminate potential squeaks.

Cons:

Can't grease inner bushing.
I've never needed to grease my bushings.

Thoughts? Good idea or waste of time?

The bushings are typically installed dry, and do not require lubrication.

Some have replaced the original rubber with urethane, which may need lubrication when installed to not squeak.

This sounds like another level beyond that, and usually would be unnecessary. Perhaps he installed bearings to replace the bushings? Have you taken the cover off to have a look at whats there?

Yeah my guess is the same, urethane or some other aftermarket bushing that requires greasing. Dont grease a stock type. many greases might even accelerate degradation.

Yup, no grease... VW recommended talcum (baby) powder for the stock rubber bushings.

But I'm curious what's up with this setup... someone went to a bit of trouble, and must have had a reason...

I vaguely remember a phase in the 80s where it seemed zerks fittings were added to EVERYTHING. Cutting threads for them was an art. Maybe in the off-road racing world but in a street beetle it would be like an extra nipple- conversational but not at all practical. (That was not supposed to be like a simile)

Thanks everyone. I'm using urethane bushings. I'm not going to install the zerks. If I need to re-lube the urethane, it's not hard.
