Yeah, my other car. I went to grab pizza one night. As I was in the restaurant waiting I saw some kid go running, screaming gleefully towards my car. Not sure exactly why? Maybe he thought it was the batmobile?
The oval got a lot of thumbs up too. I sold it to buy my bus last year.

I do like that it makes people smile when I roll by in the Singlecab. It also gets me a few leads on someones VW stash, like a few box trailers full of NOS ACVW stuff.... _________________ Tom

Buses and pintos have the rear end catching on fire thing in common!
But seriously, good looking Pintos. You're preserving history.
Boy, that is something I would have never dreamed of saying 20 years ago! _________________ Tom

Funny Pinto's were brought up. I saw one of the road a couple of weeks ago for the first time in 30 years. While I've never owned one, I do have good memories of them. One of my childhood friends Mom's had one in the mid-1970's. She hauled us around in it all the time. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Driving around in my families bright yellow 74 super beetle was dang close. I think the only reason the van wins is because I live in Detroit and there are just more people. And the hype around vw busses right now. _________________ Brutis Patches Izabich: 1970 VW Transporter - 1776cc DP

Had to make a quick trip to Wal-Mart just now. (Barf.)
Took the '73.
On the way in, a lady standing at the door asked if it was my Bus. When I said, yes, "That's the fu*kin' coolest thing I've seen in a long time!"
On the way out, up ahead of me in the parking lot I heard some tween girl say something about the cool van to a couple guys who were walking to the store. He said, "oh, that's not mine, I was just looking at it!"
I do sincerely enjoy that other people enjoy seeing the old VWs.
For the Pinto fan: the Stuff You Should Know Podcast did an episode on the Ford Pinto a while back. I'm pretty sure it was within the past 3 or 4 months though it's possible I had scrolled down and picked it from a listing of older episodes. _________________ Dave Cook

I remember when you used to see Pintos driving around with “Flammable” stickers on the back. Was that a real thing or one of the faux safety recalls like Audi Unitended acceleration, Aka driver error?
I seem to remember a gas filler design defect? _________________ .ssS! |

I think they were prone to fires and explosions when rear ended because of the design and location of the fuel tank. I could be wrong as I am no Pinto expert. _________________ Tom

IIRC the fuel tank was built into the floor of the trunk and with age would leak fuel into the trunk. Since it was essentially part of the structure of the body it may have been more likely to be crushed or ripped apart in a collision as well. |

The Pinto thing was an issue for the short hatchback models due to the placement of the fuel tank being behind the rear axle & directly in front of the rear bumper, it would get ruptured when rear-ended & splash all of the fuel onto the hot, running engine of the vehicle that just hit it. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

there are 9 buses in this town of 9,000 people. they are an every day thing here.
I used to ride a '68 Triumph motorsickle with a Bonneville head. couples of a certain age, 5 to ten years older than me, would spot it. she would say "Oh look, george, it's just like the one we used to have" and he would spot the differences. I found it amusing that she would spot an old bike, and that Triumph couples stick together for decades. _________________ 73 Beetle Baja, Ghia front brakes, Type 3 rear brakes, 2220 ( 94 X 80 ), Weber Progressive, Bosch SVDA, '97 Mustang seats

Per the podcast I mentioned the problem was two (or three) fold, as I recall.
The gas tank was kind of sandwiched in between the rear axle/differential and rear bumper. So in a rear-end collision, the tank would get smashed in between the two. Sometimes the tank was ruptured by part of the bumper. Other times, it was punctured by bolts on the differential.
Also, the body would kind of compress upon impact, which would make opening the doors (and escaping the impending fireball) significantly more difficult. _________________ Dave Cook

Pintos had the sweetest rack and pinion steering ever. I got rear ended in one once, fortunately the bloke had a front mounted spare tire and the Pinto just bounced forward. They also had an incredibly low first gear. I got stuck in the mud with mine once, put it in first at idle, pushed it out of the mud hole and then walked up and got in the drivers door as it drove away slowly. Being front engine, the rear weighs very little. My folks paid $1999.00 for that car brand new. _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.
