i am using the original distributor from 1974 it has 44,000 miles on it
i refreshed with points and condenser last year and checked points gap this year as well as the timing and dwell
its possible the vac canister might be feelings its age put otherwise its been runnig strong _________________ 1974 Standard Beetle Sunbug |

humility is a virtue and while i lack many virtues ...i will admit when i am wrong.
the choke was indeed screwed up. it was wrong prior to the exhaust install and i have never noticed until now and i just never noticed...
so for those who offered their assistance and pointed to the choke being the issue ...i am officially SORRY! lol.
the choke was in good shape - the internals looked new, the valve swung freely but it was horribly adjusted.
it took some fiddling but it is now functional and idling nicely.
i went back through the carb adjustments and i think have it dialed in. i have a fresh set of plugs and will monitor the performance.
