Came across this find while taking in my mower for some work.
What do folks think? The guy was pretty firm around 7k.
Window sticker indicated VW Installed Air ? Not a dealer install ?
Supposedly a 2 owner vehicle, motor was pulled and had failed the current owner.
I'm not scared of a project, but was looking for opinions, on if indeed, this
is a decent value, too much, great deal, etc. I'm pretty comfortable with beetles, but have never jumped into the Bus/Single Cab/Double Cab world.
Thank you ahead of time !

That looks like a great base to start with. It is a good deal for $7k as it looks to have very minimal rust. Looks to be a 1962 truck which is the last year for the full 1 piece bench seat and the first year for the larger tail lights and turn signals. Grab it before someone else does. _________________ September 1964 Standard Sunroof walk through SWR/BG original paint. |

Agreed. Good deal. It has two doors for the cargo area under the bed (i.e., dual treasure chest doors), which is a really nice option to have. Still a good deal without that though. _________________ Please buy my Treasure |

Looks to me like a dual treasure chest '62 SC, going off the doglegs, the mounting steering damper mounting position, turn signals, meh meh meh, etc. I'd echo the masses' opinion and say it's a good deal. Minus the rear wheel wells and possibly some floor metal work, it looks like it's also in fairly decent shape.
Is the front seat the correct humpback backrest and base, if it is a '62? Does it matter to you? How does the bed look? If you go for it, remember to ask for the rear apron-might not be installed and he may have it off to the side. Good luck! _________________ ,,Wenige Menschen denken, und doch wollen alle entscheiden.'' -der Alte Fritz

Looks solid! Like the others said, get it before someone else does. $7k and straight bus is a good deal. _________________ Phil 4:13 |

... looks rock solid... kinda' lot of money to shell out though - needs n engine and rear wells cut... nice, if you have $7K to invest
i'd probably go buy an older F150 XL pickup with 3 speed and a 6 cylinder, for half that money. _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

I was wondering the same. Air con heat exchanger for the compressor?
I see rust holes in on what looks like the inner sill/rocker to the left of that picture. Is that localised, or are they both like that along their length?
What are the bed, treasure chest floor and the insides of the gates (the ribbed bits) like?
Edit, this picture shows quite a lot of rust in the inner sills. The outers look lumpy too...
Lots of broken bondo on the rear gate. Not sure how much much fixing that will cost though?[/img] _________________ Andy

TY for all the reply's !!
Other than that tailgate and the area under .. what I assume is some sort of compressor .. i didnt see any real major rust issues.
When I go back to take a look again, I am going to do so in the morning when it isnt so bloody hot and I can take my time crawling around it without burning my back on the asphault.
I'm not to concerned about 'original', but if it is all the way she rolled off, I consider that a bonus. If it really had factory air, that would be something, as I was always under the impression that the dealers did that or some aftermarket add on was involved and it was usually a hack job.
I've seen the pulled engine, the pulley has some sort of extra pulley attached to it which i assume was related to the AC.
Anyways, thank you again for the information, if you have more .. I am ALL ears .. I love this site .. geez _________________ 'Annie B' - 67' Beetle

If you can afford the $7K and want to buy it, bring a screwdriver and poke that sucker from end to end, and/or a magnet for bondo looking areas.
That rot hole in the bottom left of pic, leads me to think there is more ROT lurking, if you can exspose more rot, it might help in dickering on the price.
Also AC is only as good as the parts still in place and parts available.
Any pics pf the truck bed itself ?
It does look pretty good from pics , but it could be an older resto/body repair w/ lots of hidden rot...
Singlecabs Rock !! If you don't need a passenger Bus, they are a great work horse truck, so versitle, and that one is a Dual treasure chest, nice option to have. I have dozens of pics of my Single at work in my gallery, and they make a great party table in the Garage !!

A SC in your neck of the woods in that condition is a rare find. Don't hesitate. If you find you don't care much for the single life it will return every penny. _________________

No split buses had factory air or even dealer installed air as far as I know. The earliest bus I ever saw with dealer installed was 1972, but I think there were some a few years before that.
If it is bodged in somehow it might make a nice addition for those in hot climates. Not so much room in the cab. Might actually be able to put the evaporator under the load floor and duct the air under or around the seat. Don't know if anyone makes mounting for a modern rotary compressor, but they certainly give better performance than the old York compressors.
Looks like a good project. _________________ Al Brase

Wow, the first pic is a 15 or 23 window!
Not sure I'd go for the roof mount condenser, tho. It would make for short hoses, but too ugly for me.

Yup. It puts the ugh in fugly, that's for sure. It's no longer mounted on my bus. It wasn't on it when I got it, but I've got a lot of the pieces. If I ever sell the bus, those will of course go with it. Only have seen one other, on a 23 that was being sold years ago. The bus was beat down hard, but there were some a/c components that I would have loved to have had. The seller wouldn't even reply to me emails or PMs. Such is life. |
