|

Hi guys.
For the past month or so I have been experiencing some problems with my Squareback, after running for few minutes it dies. The longest I drove it was for about 40 minutes and I thought I have fixed the problem. Now I can run it for 5-10 minutes. For the most part car starts right up.
These are the things I have done so far :
- Mechanical fuel pump is working
- Points were changed and calibrated
- Condenser were changed
- Coil was changed
- Distributor cap and rotor were changed
I dont know what else I can do. Here is a little video where you can see the car that was already running and at the end it just dies. It looks like I had flip a switch to turn it off. Lights still on the dash.
Is there anything else (electronically) that keeps the car running.
I do see like a relay and such underneath the backseat.

Check for 12v at the coil when it dies. If no power the switch may be heating up and losing contact.
Does it have fuel?
If so, is the ignition coil hot?
How old is the condenser?
Point gap too small?
How long since the last valve adjustment?
Are the chokes opening?
Does it have electromagnetic cutoff jets? If so, are they hooked up and working? _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Of course
If so, is the ignition coil hot?
Noy sure but it was replaced
How old is the condenser?
New
Point gap too small?
017
How long since the last valve adjustment?
2 years but only 300 miles driven
Are the chokes opening?
I think so because the car starts right up. its only after few minutes the car shuts off
Does it have electromagnetic cutoff jets? If so, are they hooked up and working Im going to check that, not sure yet
? |
BTW car is 6v still |

I'm glad you decided to post your problem into an open forum. I didn't even think about a possible ignition switch being flaky. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I agree with checking power at the coil.
Does it start right back up or do you have to wait?
This could indicate something is getting hot and failing. |
From what I can tell starts right up |

I would temporarily disconnect the wire at the coil that comes from the ignition (and tape it off). Run a new wire from the fuse box (one thats always hot) with a switch to the coil instead. Flip the switch, use your key to start it, should start right up. Drive it around. If it still acts up it's something else. If it's now fine, it's your ignition switch. _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

Yup. Exactly how I'd do it. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I checked the carbs last night and I do have 2 Solex 32 Pic 3, each one has a cut off valve. Is there anyway to check a cut off valve ?
If one fails, both carbs dies or one just dies and the other carb should still be running ?
Thanks |

The electric cutoff valves? They are independent.
To check them, turn the key to on.
Disconnect the power wire to one of them, then reconnect it.
You should hear a click.
No click = it's bad. _________________ How to Post Photos

I heard when a cutoff valve is bad the engine wont idle but the engine should stay on at high rpm. Mine dies because because I cant rev it up. |

I suppose it's possible a shorting EM jet could bring down the ignition voltage and affect both carbs as well as the spark. I haven't had that happen to me, however. |

Yes, it would stall at idle as it would be cutting off the idle circuit for gas.
When the car is revved up, you are "above" the idle circuit. _________________ How to Post Photos

It's not very common for them to go bad though. also, they are on the same wire coming from your ignition to your coil which we went over earlier _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |
