Hoping for a some advice on the best books out there on the VW beetle. I would like something that covers the following.

1) Best general history book

2) Detailed year to year changes

Thanks

Lots of threads about books if you search, and a neat summary of most of them here:

A very readable general history is Nelson's "Small Wonder":

For yearly changes there are several websites that chronicle most of the changes.

I’ve got a few books myself but if I had to pick just one for entertainment value it’s not a shop manual or a history book rather it brings together odd facts. One which was a list of every ad in Life and Look magazine, much easier than paging through looking.

I have probably read most of the books about VW and Beetles but for best history I would say 'Battle for the Beetle' by Karl Ludvigsen it not only covers the VW but gives an idea of the technical thinking of the times pre and post war and is very readable too. for year to year changes then 'Der Kafer' by Etzold vol 1 is always my go to tome

ordered a few books yesterday.

Service manual for 61-65 for my 1963 as well as Muir's manual.

Otherwise I picked up:

- The Complete Book of Classic Volkswagens: Beetles, Microbuses, Things, Karmann Ghias,

- Thinking Small: The Long, Strange Trip of the Volkswagen Beetle
