I have a 74 thing and i think theres only 63,ooo on it but i dont think its the original motor. The reason why is it has a oil fillter on it. I was wondering if that was a option on the car. Thank's for any help.

If the filter is off the oil pump it is an aftermarket item that could be put on almost any air clooled engine. Post the engine serial # and someone will be able to tell you.

Where is the serial # located and should there be one on the engine that matches the car #?

It is under the generator stand, right thru the fan belt, and should start with AM if it is a Thing motor. The 74's started with engine # somewhere around 11,821 according to various references.

Sounds like you have the motor that your car came with from the factory. Someone probably slapped the filter on during a rebuild.
