I’m posting this to start some discussion on the topic. I do not own it, but I was part of it’s recovery. It was pulled from a property in Nevada and will end up in the capable hands of Eric Hand in Nor-Cal for restoration.

All signs point to it being a legit early 62. The passenger side marker light hole had been welded up. The drivers fender is a later replacement. Instead of cutting in new side marker holes, they just welded up the trim holes in the replacement fender along with the OG passenger side marker hole.

Inside passenger fender. See the welds?

Being 0043001 it makes you wonder what the FIRST Squareback vin was.... Could it be the 001 is the first one? Hmm doubtful, but who would knows? With early Type 34, Notchback and Squareback all sharing the vin number sequence, it’s all a guess I suppose.

Notchback were first, then type 34 and lastly the squarebqcks appeared. Parts cars started production in 1966.

Here are some facts about early Variants:
- first Variant built was #0 006 827
- oldest known is this #0 034 001
- 1962 models end at #0 066 739 (Export models) & #0 094 815 (German models)
- 1963 model year ends at #0 221 974
- the database for Early Variant Registry has four 1962s & forty-six 1963s
- there are five RHD 1962-63 Variants in the database

It's super-exciting news to hear that this earliest one has surfaced & is now in the right hands to be authentically restored. We're here to help you, Eric!

Fantastic score.

34001 = about the 10th April 1962.

The engine number will be very similar too.

If the engine is there- look behind in the bell housing for the date code of the case castings.

No engine unfortunately. However, there is supposedly several engines “piled” up in an out building on this property. It’ll be worth going back for another look to try and locate the engine.

Awesome find. Glad to hear Eric Hand has it too since he has a big workshop and tons of knowledge.

VIN # is interesting since it's 001 but maybe just a coincidence.

What was the deal with the red square with the refrigerator type sunroof that ISP had back in 2007/2008?

These are the only pictures I have of it, taken in '07

Is that the squareback vin or the notch that was stored with it?

That is the vin from the notchback - that square is a 63.
