i successfully used the standard stuff for about 20 years before glenn gave me a tube of the real bosch grease...both very similar in consistancy....never tried the echlin stuff....they say its a moly grease rather than silicone based...amazon has the standard....and wheel bearing grease is certainly better than nothing at all |

Here's a pic of the inside of an uncleaned original dist using regular grease, you can see it is not flung all over like the old wife's tale

Hell bacon grease would beat nothing. Use that stuff in the link I posted and you will be fine.

I admit that I've used wheel bearing grease there successfully for many decades. I only re-discovered my tube of Bosch grease, was hidden away. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Any chance that the "flung all over" thing was more due to applying too much, and in a glob, rather than a thin coat?
Glad I bought a tube of Mallory distributor grease when I could, though! _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

Why ? because some don't agree with you and others about what to use and show alternatives?

Just stating something after reading the print in the link below and other things said here by the experts.

I have a restored 205t. Do I need to grease in any other place besides where the points rubbing block touches the cam and oiling the wick? |

Just a dusting at the points rubbing block and you will be fine. Others wise you getting that "chirping" sound.
I also use dielectric grease on O rings, electrical connections (like light bulbs/sockets), ignition wires (at the cap and plug), and rubber things that needs some lube. |

if you saw some of the runny slop i had to clean out of wheel bearings 40 years ago you'd know where the concept of grease being flung around inside the distributor came from...the higher temps of disc brakes being the norm these days the current generation of wheel bearing grease is a far cry from what was available back then...i think that stuff WAS bacon grease |

The distributor shaft moves relatively slowly, I can't imagine it could fling anything thicker than 3-in-1 off.
I also find it hard to believe distributor grease was ever anything other than some preexisting formulation, repackaged and priced up. |

Absolutely true. If you take the time to spread the grease instead of just glob it on there, it's not likely to fling itself about even at 1,500 revs per minute (3,00RPM). _________________ Roads Scholar &
