|
|
My bus has been off the road since 1977. It is a east coast bus and was sitting outside that whole time. The gear shift is in neutral and will not move out of that position. It is like it is frozen there. The shifter will not even move side to side. I want to try and get that fixed while there is no cargo floor in. Any suggestions will be very helpful. _________________ Be happy with what you have, you will save allot of money that way....

Just start taking stuff off until you figure out where it's stuck. If it ends up being stuck in the trans you can pull the fill plug and access one of the sliders and try to move it forward and backward with a screw driver. If you can't get the slider to move that way then there's probably something very wrong internally. |

I'd probably start by removing the rear shift coupler, then you can see if it's the shift rods front to rear that are frozen or the transmission itself.
If you unbolt the coupler and it moves all around, then the transmission itself is not shifting gears. If it's already in neutral that would be strange as it doesn't have to push/pull anything to move side-to-side, it's only the hockey stick rotating inside the nosecone.
Neutral position
The 3 forks are lined up so the hockey stick selector can move between them all without any resistance.
You could remove the shifter up front to see if that's frozen.
This seems weird to me but I guess it could be frozen in place inside the housing that bolts to the floor. _________________ How to Post Photos

Can this be accessed without removing transaxle? _________________ Be happy with what you have, you will save allot of money that way....

The nose cone is attached to the front mount, so removing it with the transmission in place is not possible. |

Yes, it's underneath and "couples" the shift rod to the nose cone of the transmission
You have to crawl underneath and look right in front of the transmission
It might be a pain to remove one of the square nuts though if the Bus is super rusty - it might break off.
The other photo I posted above with the 3 shift forks is inside the nose cone of the transmission, you won't be able to see that. _________________ How to Post Photos

Ok. I see that part because the cargo floor is removed. I will try and remove that to see if that helps. I will try and heat up the bolts first. Thank you. _________________ Be happy with what you have, you will save allot of money that way....

Sounds like the hockey stick is stuck in the nose cone bushings. Maybe rusted a little. If it has not been submerged in water, it might not be so bad. I'd get a big Channel locks on the shift coupler and gently rotate it first, then work it back and forth , trying to get it to move a little. If you can move it at all, then some penetrating oil will help.
It could also be stuck in the tube between the trans and the shifter.
GENTLY is key here so you can work it loose without destroying stuff.
Once you have the trans out, it is always good to put new bushings (and maybe the hockey stick) in the nose cone and coupler and shift tube bushings. _________________ Al Brase

You have zero movement at the shift lever? I've seen the ball and socket right there at the base of the shift lever rust together. Can you push down on the shift lever? |

I went out this morning and checked. I can push it down and it moves about 1.5 to 2 inches side to side. I don't think that's much because my 69 bay moved allot more than that. _________________ Be happy with what you have, you will save allot of money that way....

Can you have someone move it and watch where the movement becomes stationary? At least that way it might narrow it down before taking stuff apart. |

Yes, good point, but REALLY, everything needs to come apart before it gets driven.
But exactly try to get a helper to pinpoint the seized point.

I got it free. It was frozen in the long tube under the cargo floor area. While shifting it back and forth trying work the lube through, this happened. What is the name of this part?

I am ordering the parts for the shifter. I am ordering the gear shift coupler, 2 replacement coupler screws and it says that I will need 2 shift rod boots but I only seen 1. What is the shift rod bushing http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=111701259A
I am not sure where that would go. Is there anything else that I am missing? The end of the shift rod was rusted and there is a small bit of it that is rusted away. It should still be fine to use shouldn't it? I just want to make sure I get stuff taken care of while the cargo floor is out. It is allot easier that way. Thanks. _________________ Be happy with what you have, you will save allot of money that way....

Where it goes into the shift coupler?
As long as the outside of it is pretty tight in there and the spot where the screw goes into it is ok, it should be ok.
Post a pic if you want... _________________ How to Post Photos
