Super Beetle exhaust heat shields help

I just got my engine rebuilt and I am looking for metal heat shields that attach to the bend in the exhaust. I want to avoid using any kind of heat tape that prevents cooling thus leading to a crack in the pipe. Below are pictures of the part I am asking about. Do they have a name and does anyone know how to source some? If not, I was considering flattening the current rusted one to make a template to cut out of aluminum flashing and attempt to form some. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It looks like you installed J-tubes rather than heater boxes. The rusty piece may be part of a heater box. I am not familiar with heat shields on the exhaust system of a bug (unless it's a FI only part or after market exhaust part).

later bugs with catalysts have different exhaust parts than other Bugs. is yours catalyst equiped? if so you may wish to consult vendors that supply the later parts. I do not recognize your parts as being pre catalyst type.

I have a 1976 Fuel Injected engine. I do have heater boxes. I live near Philadelphia, PA.

the 75 thru 79 injected American market bugs have an exhaust a good deal different than earlier Bugs, California market had some additional differences.

The above links show the different bits that should fit your Bug. Note the california version has a short muffler, making room for a catalyst along side it

Many of these exhaust and heater parts are no longer made, nor ever where made aftermarket. They are a bit rare in some cases, but needed to pass some smog tests. Hold onto any you may replace unless they are totally trashed, they may be better than nothing. manifolds even with rusted out pipes maybe repaired with new pipe using original end castings for instance. Good muffler shops usually can handle this work.

Perhaps you can show a wide angle over all view of the exhaust system you have. I assume the pipe you show did have a heat shield on it, either to protect the engine or the rear apron paint work from excessive radiant heat, or to maintain temperature for catalyst operation.

The Bentley Official VW Service Manual for your year or newer has photographs of the underside of the Bug showing the injected exhaust, it may help you determine what you have, what is missing. Every owner should have this manual....

This is pretty much exact to the system to the one I have.

I have both a Bentley and a "how to keep your air cooled volkswagen alive" manual.

I did have issues with some of my tin and I have gotten replacements. Unfortunately, the throttle cable hole on my new doghouse is in the wrong location because of the FI, so I had to drill a hole to make it work. The engine rebuild that was done by a reputable shop has most of my investment so far. I am pretty close to having the engine fully assembled. I'm a little anxious to turn the key to see it fire up but weary at the same point.
