Hi All,
I saw these wheels on a Bug for sale, and sort of love them! Any help identifying what they are would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you! |

Formula Vee. Most folks call them "Turtles", I think. That's what I call them and that's all that matters. |

Better known as Turtleback wheels I think, but manufactured by Performance Industries, called a VOLKSMAG II & known for its convex shape. I like them natural gray or polished best.

The Wheels in question first appeared in the 1973 Volkswagen Accessories Catalog as : "Mag Wheels" made by Superior Industries whom named these VolksMag II which is part of the casting on the back inside. They were made for VW as part of the Formula Vee Accessories Line. They were 15" x 4 1/2", 4 Lug and were available in Silver Grey or Matte Black Finish. Wolfsburg Center Caps and used a special Mag Lug to mount.
Superior Industries also sold these directly and made a special casting of these wheels in 15" x 5 1/2", 4 lug and they had a center cap with their "S" Logo which are very sought after and hard to find.
The name "Turtleback" has been adopted because of course they look like a turtle's back pattern and convex shape as Mike stated.

That is a incredible amount of detail. Thank you all for the input. I am working on tracking down a set but will either be pricey or take a bit of time. Maybe both! |
