I just did a search and while tail lights are mentioned in many threads there does not seem to be a thread dedicated to them. Shall we start one? Get them all in one place?
Tail lights are a huge part of the personality that our Buggies exude/express when viewed from the rear and - that's the view most people get the most of - correct?
Or are you still running a 36 hp engine...
I will start it off with a view of mine and will also confess that this is the view of my Buggy that I like the least. Quite frankly I think it's a bit ugly - like a fake dress shirt collar that is missing the bowtie - or something like that!
So yes there is a bit of an ulterior motive in starting this thread - idea sharing!
LET'S SEE THEM HINNIES!!

Left one was my first buggy with '66-'67 tail lights.
Right one is my current buggy that was my dad's with '59 El Camino tail lights.
Finally found replacements a couple years ago:

LED semi-tailights super bright and easily replaceable.
Old Mustang lights

Classic Mustang, but internally divided so the inner 2 sections of each taillight where the tail light and brake light and the outer section was the turn signal.

Mine are the old style trailer/truck lights that every jobber carried at one time. You know the one - wire circle clip holds the lens in. The issue is they leak and tend to fill with road dust and water and are hardly visible in the day light.
I want to replace them but two things stand in the way. One is the air cleaners are directly behind them and there is no clearance for a deeper housing and two is I don't want to be cutting and patching jell coat at this time. |

If you go to Speedway Motors, and other shops that sell street rod parts, you may find some options. Increasingly, they are selling LED versions of classic tail lights. These LED options often don't extend behind the body. You can get flush mount LED versions of classic tail lights like '39 Ford, '40 Willys, or '50 Pontiac. There are many options. _________________

My first buggy: Reproduction ‘40 Ford tail lights. These required some custom molding on the body since they were intended for a curved rear fender.
My current buggy: European aftermarket ‘73-‘79 Super Beetle. The Manxter body is recessed for stock SB VW tail lights, but these are much nicer looking, and use an amber turn signal bulb in lieu of the amber lens section.

oprn... How observant - good description. To my eye, few are more appropriate than old Beetle, even on a plastic model.
But, buggys are highly personal forms of expression. 'There is no wrong answer.'

I couldn't agree more but in my case, because of the angle of the body it would leave the tail lights sticking out at odd angles like an old milk cow with a bad case of mastitis.

For sure! And this seems to be the view with some of the best variety of expression. |

I'm thinking most people don't really notice the tail lights on my Buggy.......especially when the BOV goes off.........
But in case you aren't a power junkie these are 67 VW tail lights........
The metal housings were cut to make the lights sit square with the body. _________________

Bought it with these, From a Chevy Vega:
Replaced with reproduction 1950 Pontiac because I needed something to fit the holes that were already there:
I would like to use stock 1960s VW tailights because they have reflectors built in, but these will have to do until I decide to do fiberglass work. I think these look good, but the angle of the rear panel makes the Pontiac tail lights not as bright as they could be, because the light falls off as you get more off axis. In bright sun they are nearly impossible to see.

'60 Pontiac Bonneville, I turned the chrome housings down on a lathe, then turned '63 Impala center trim rings down to fit the Pontiac lenses. |

'62-'67 Beetle. I'd love to find a reasonably-priced chrome set.

Pontiac lights from speedway. I built pods for them and sunk them into the body.

The recessed tail lights look so cool but I wonder if a side marker light would be wise with them. Say something in the rear wheel well or on the engine cage?
In the city with lots of street lights maybe not but in the 'burbs... or for us country guys... |

My buggy's Camaro tail lights are somewhat recess'd, but that's not the only reason I built a rear side light:
Here's an interesting "study" on various Manx tail light choices:

1950 Pontiac tail lights seem pretty popular. Here is my Berry Mini-T.
