Here it is! A '71 Westy I just rescued from a backyard where it had been sitting for 10 years. What do you think?

i think it's a rusty pile that is not worth putting any money into.
part it out and buy something that is deserving of being fixed. _________________ thebucket: I invested in hoodride, now DBD won't return my call?

I think I am glad I live in sunny, dry California. That bus is going to require very proficient body and fabrication skills to make it safe to drive. I hope the best for you. I do not have the experience, time or money to marry up to something like that. |

Ct, Ct, Ct.... you should know better than to ask such open-ended questions like that in The Samba.
It's like a wife asking her husband if her jeans make her butt look fat.
Answer: "No. Your butt makes your butt look fat."
Now, that being said, I had hoped to be more optimistic about your recent acquisition. But I'm gonna have to side with the others here... Seeing that amount of rust is overwhelming. There is the one gentleman in the UK that started with one that looked like that and got it running and looking great. However the cost must have been prohibitive for most of us mere mortals.
But you have experience with air cooled engines. See if this one can get running cheaply. You can sell the drive train for a few hundred, and you'll be ahead money-wise. And anything else that can be sold will be pure profit for the next one.
Edit: On the plus side, your new bus is well ventilated! _________________ -Kent-

Well I guess it's a parts bus... It's okay I guess, I wanted a late bay anyway. I'll try getting the motor running, and sell the drive train. I went into this buying it as a most likely parts bus so it doesn't really crush me. _________________ '67 Beetle L41

Oh that was hurtful but god damn funny!
That bus is a goner! Give it last rights as you harvest anything worth taking off it. A person that would put $1 dollar into that bus would have to be "wicked retarded"..
For $200 you didn't do bad. There's lots of parts on there folks would buy from ya. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

No joke there... on both counts she said as long as it doesn’t make the yard look bad I can part it out. Still gonna clean it up though and see what’s good and what’s bad on it. _________________ '67 Beetle L41

Put up a 50 foot long, used sheet metal fence in your front yard. No more issues with the yard looking like hell, because you can't see anything.
Start breeding Dobermans in your new acquisition. Put their dogshit in the BBQ when the neighbors turn bitchy.
When the Connecticut mosquitos start breeding in the summer, burn those old tires. The smoke will keep them away. Well, it worked for us in Kennebunk, anyway. |

Why is it somewhere along a Westy's life history some stupid PO cuts a HOUSE heater vent register into the Z-bed. These guys did it right in the middle of the door. I can't count how many busses I've seen with this PO "mod". Ug. |

That one is brutal.
Camper gear, engine, transmission
Front axle
Mscl
100 hours labor to make 1500 in parts I guess. $15 an hour.
That’s why you stay in school. _________________ .ssS! |

they installed a propane furnace..normally a very comfortable feature..
the execution can always be done better.
but better it's in the door than in the nice open face panel of the seat base.
should still get a couple hundred for the westy interior bits.
~500 for the 3rib transmission
?$ for the engine parts.. though the 71 only doghouse firewall tin lists 75-100.. _________________

Lots of usable parts still left. Looks like all the glass is still ok. Is the engine still intact? You get a lot of good parts off that if it is. Like original German tin work and the one year intake manifold. Even the wheels might still be ok. And some camper parts. _________________ '66 Beetle

Engine is till there and turns by hand. Do you think of I got it running, I could get more than the parts would get or no? _________________ '67 Beetle L41
