I read some threads in this topic, and John from aircooled.net said most be guys are too cheap to put them on. Is it in fact that we are too cheap? Or are the not necessary? What’s the consensus on this?

I investigated this a ways back and supposedly the type 1 should have one but the type IV does not. Changing the main bearing placement in the type V supposedly eliminates the issue with the type I harmonics.

When the right people see this thread they will state the technical reasons. Very Happy

I have never needed one, the factory didnt supply them. For a stockish motor it probably is money not well spent. If vibrations of the crank where an issue, wed have a lot of crank/bearing failures, but stock Bugs dont suffer from that. the flat four is fairly well balanced by design with its opposed pistons. some other engine configurations are more susceptible to destructive vibrations.

Id pass on it, specially for the price quoted, but most my motors are close to stock. But even my 2180 cc Bug motor dont have one

They are not currently available and were somewhere around $500 back when they were. They didn't sell enough to justify continuing making them. If you want some reading go to www.geneberg.com and read his opinion.
