My 74 Thing just started having starter problems. The solenoid does not always actuate. The battery is fully charged and the starter doesn't turn. If you hit it with a hammer it works great.
Is this a new starter or a starter relay? I have a spare starter in my parts stash, if I can find it. I had a hard start relay on my 70 bus and it solved the problem.

Sam....I started having starter trouble on my '73. Sometimes it would work, and sometimes not. It turned out to be a bad ground strap from the transaxle to the frame. I put on a new one and problem solved.

I had a similar problem and it was the starter solenoid. There is a braided strap between the solenoid and the starter motor body make sure that is good. You can take apart the solenoid end with a high temp (butane) solder iron and then inside there are copper contacts that have carbon build up on them that you can clean up with a dremel.

There is a post on thesamba detailing taking apart the solenoid and doing the repair.

There are also brushes in the starter motor.

I saw a starter solenoid relay on Amazon for $13 and am having it delivered. I put one on a 70 bus that fixed the same problem, so I will try that first. IK'll let you all know.
