Stopped by my friend's shop and there was a nice 66 Bus on the lift. The repaint was not the best and a number of things were incorrect but still a nice bus. I was told the owner paid $33,000 for it... OUCH.
The bus was running OK and the owner wanted it tuned up, then they found this:
Looks like the PO never dropped the strainer.. EVER.
This is why VW discontinued the drain plug in the 70s. _________________ Glenn

Or changed the oil! The rest of the inside of the engine will look like that too! Dilemma - try and rise it out and risk ruining the bearings or take it apart now to try and save the engine! |

I found the same thing in a '65 Beetle I bought (against the advice of my better half, I should add). The engine seized in a puff of smoke about seven months later. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

I've had a couple cars I bought that had a little less than that.
Changed the oil a bunch of times and everything seemed fine.
The heads were dirty as crap too.
I did wonder if there was some way of flushing the engine but was afraid it would blow it up. _________________ How to Post Photos

That sludge almost looks gritty as well. At that point I think we'd have two choices.
1) Flush the engine several times with clean oil-
2)
Personally, I couldn't roll the dice as I can't drive a car I don't trust. I'd have to tear the engine down and inspect. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

My brothers Chevy motor looked like that in the oil fill hole. Put a motor flush in it and ran it before changing oil. Cleaned it right up. I cant remember name but think it was seafoam.
I buy cars VW especially for the body. Engines are easier to replace than body work. |

If that is what they hid in the engine I would hate to see what they hid under a fresh coat of paint! |

The answer is no because any of the flush chemicals such as Rislone will release all the sludge and clog oil cooler and or oil galleries. I have experience with this because it happened to me |

I bought an old 40 horse at a salvage for fifty bux... taking a chance. The same thing was found, when I removed the screen. I filled it with oil and a qt. of trans fluid and ran it that way for a hundred miles - did that 3x... that was several years ago and while it still ran, it burned oil. PUT THAT ENGINE IN A '63 BUG I TRADED FOR A 1955 BUG.
The new owner said, he'll rebuild the engine, anyway. _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

NEVER use an engine flush product on a vehicle!!!
It does exactly what it is designed to do, it breaks up the carbon & sludge in the engine which then is in suspension in the oil, most of which is too large to pass through the pickup screen at the oil pump which in turn starves the engine of oil. Then, if any makes it past the pump & screen, it then clogs other smaller passages in the engine. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

The oil that came out was clean so I ASSume they did change it but never dropped the plate.

Rockers weren't bad so again looks like they did change the oil.

I once flushed an engine with kerosene and didn't have any problems.
Bottom line is, it's not my engine and the owner saw it. It's up to them if they want to let it roll or do something about it. _________________ Glenn
