Hello, I picked up a 74 beetle a couple years back (3) and have slowly been restoring it. Funds and location have limited the work, she stays outside in the carport during winter. Have done alot to her so far: pans, ball joints, brakes, front end, so on.
I have put the motor back in, after cleaning things up (not a rebuild) and would appreciate any pointers on what i should still be looking for. It has an electronic ignition, and from what i have read the distributer should be replace. Right now I would just like to try and get her on the road.

Looks fun! Check the oil level and start that thing up! _________________ Jimbo

Figured i better start from the beggining: bought the car in fall 2015. Hard to find a decent bug in Fairbanks and I knew I wanted a project. Here's the first shots of when i bought it.

First work to be done was chase down the wiring. When i drove it home the left blinker went on when i hit the right one. Brake and blinkers both went on for stops. Headlights worked, front markers did not. Oh yea, the ignitions swiths hung down by the wires since the housing was broke. Thats how i learned about the several types of ignition switches.

A little pan work that was done. They were in pretty bad shape, "fixed" with sheet metal siliconed to the pans.

Made a rotisserie for the pan work. Being able to roll it around, as well as spin it made all the difference in the world!

RED!
Did you use the original seats to correctly position the cross-hump front mount and the rear slider channels before welding them onto your new pans?
What does your region use on the roads for snow and ice control- salt or sand?
I'm actually surprised you still found any Beetle in Alaska. |

I shose red cause i really wanted it to stand out. I knew i wasnt going for a traditional restore, just a fun project. I used the old pans as a template for the hump, and the sliders were already attached. The pans were "1/2" pans fom M&T. Shipping for full pans would have been around $350. They use a mix of salt and sand, but primarily sand. Salt doesnt work well after -10. Roads are actually better to drive on here the ccolder it is.
I looked for quite a while to find a bug that wasnt to tore up. Might have paid a little over for this one, but i had done alot of research of parts cost.
Biggest problem is shipping-a couple of companies have free shipping, but not to the foreign contry of Alaska. Some items i had sent to my daughter in Kansas and she would send it in a flat rate box to me.
Once I brought back a muffler and two heater boxes in my luggage. Had a TSA note that they looked in that suitcase. |

Befor you get any further, I would STRONGLY suggest coating the pan bottom, inner fenders and iside of the fenders with POR-15 or bedliner. Also, do the rockers. If using a bedliner, most can be painted over with paint.
A little late, but doing the beam as well would have been a good idea. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

andk5591,
Thanks for the info. I did coat the bottom but forgot to add the pic! I had seen others in the forrum had made one and how much a time saver it was. I havent done the inner/inside fenders yet but will hit them with the same stuff once I get time. The bug if "Fair weather" only right now. (Issues with the wing windows shutting after new seals installed). Covered the rockers with roofing weatherproofing already for sound deadening.

Why do you think you need to replace the distributor?
I love the work you've done so far. Don't be afraid to spray oil all around the underside as well. It'll collect dirt and make a tar like substance that is damn near salt proof. _________________ No boom today. Boom tomorrow. There's always a boom tomorrow. |
