I think the last fellow who did one said he would have saved time pulling the engine instead of trying to do it in the bus. This is a 1970's vehicle and not a late model 10,000 sensor engine.

Would be nice to see what’s going on under those valve covers.
To bad Averys is so backed up. Question. Could OP slap a couple of new heads on (or one) out of the box to get home. Then have heads gone through once home? Or will heat cycles screw with them too much? Dustin, If you planing on replacing heads. Might consider applying exhaust hardware in liquid wrench or PB now.

Broke down in front of an ACVW shop in the Pacific Northwest with hardware stores in walking distance. You could do worse Wink

I put your bus broken down right about here.

Oh yeah, my first choice would always be drop the engine, but it's not impossible to do it installed, no fun and a much shittier job in many ways, but not impossible.

I looked at Colin's schedule. He was in Boise yesterday. That is 8 hours. Don't know if he would be willing to backtrack but if so that is an option too. I am sure one would have to pay double time or at least time and mileage. He was just in that area you are a couple days ago. Robbie is also around but I don't know how familiar he is with T4 head swaps. Colin is really comfortable with it. I am too far south from you to help - 650 miles.

Sounds like a main bearing/rod knock. Looking at a total engine rebuild. Keep y’all posted! Grabbing dinner and continuing north...

And in that case, blind luck as to where the valve stem broke..... Cool

Indeed, but a roadside head swap with the engine in place in a couple hours is rather epic don't you think?, not saying everyone is up to it, but it can be done.
No doubt! Like a Baja pit crew or something.

Good news is the roadside head option is off the table. Moving forward is good.

Strange to have a Type 4 bottom end failure. There would be more shops out there capable of turning Type 4 cranks if that happened often.

FedEx in a complete long block and get Stu to install it. Should only be about a two hour job and completely rebuilt T4 long blocks are readily available and super cheap. Plus Stu works for fast food.

Yeah, I’m a dick. Just being that way because in my opinion you’re really fucked. You’re traveling and now you lost an engine in a rare, 40 something year old car. It’s not like you can just drop by Autozone and grab one.

Leave the bus. Have fun in your rental car. Figure out what to do later.

could be a rod knock if the valve smacked a piston.

Is there a 40 year old vehicle on the road that isn't rare? VW Transporters might well be the most common 40 year old vehicle a person might see out on the road any given time frame warpage.Smile

Ok, I’m wrong. Let’s see the links for available complete long blocks that will solve these people’s problem. Something that a cc and fast shipping can get to them in two days so Stu can work his magic and get them on their way by next week. I’m waiting.....

Got it back to the farm...Looking like we are going to power wash the engine and trans, remove and tear down to the short block and inspect for a proper diagnosis. This guy also happens to be a 11 year master boat mechanic, so between my limited expertise with VWS and where to get parts, and his tools and ability to turn a wrench, I’m guessing we can do a full rebuild in a week or two depending on machine shop turn around time. You guys are treating this like a couple high school girls just blew their engine on their 25k bus...chillax for a bit and let me get some accurate diagnostics done so we can fill you in on the proper details.

Getting the right information can really help to point the finger in the right direction... or in this case, what the next step is.

It’s not like I’m going to use Ketchup And JB WELD to do a quick partial rebuild fix...we will fix it right. Wink

Sounded like it may have been rebuilt in the past due to having solid lifters (which was discovered during a valve adjust) and its a 78, which should have hydros. Wouldn’t surprise me the builder wasn’t as good as a German. Rolling Eyes
