I give him major kudos, too. Stu is always eager to help out where and when he can.

I will say this. Even though the engine build was a disappointment . Because of Stuart’s good intentions and hospitality. The OP gained a ton of valuable ACVW knowledge. People pay Colin and Robbie $500 a day to learn. That guy got one hell of a scholarship and no doubt he will graduate with honors when he gets the bus home. Stuart, you took your beat down like a man Applause Applause
You probably gained a lot from this experience too. Keep on whistling brother.

Let's think of Stuart as a proctologist..

The patient comes in to get his rear end scoped or something,
But he shat his pants!

The good Dr. Proctor might have said something like,
"Dude, you can't come in here until you've cleaned yourself up."

Yet,
He dove in, shoveled away a clean spot, and started working.

Good on you, Stu.

I hope you at least got paid for _some_ of your work..

Maybe I should also point out that this wasn’t a hasta Alaska situation ...he wasn’t mooching by any means. Changes the game when people can fund their own trip even when the motor goes. Give Dustin some credit for not being typical broke trash that buys a bus and hasn’t got a clue. Dude knew his stuff and prepared financially for his trip. And he was a nice guy to boot.

His girlfriends dog on the other hand...I was doing my best to find a local eagle or hawk to help solve that problem, and no luck! Laughing

Edit: and he more then covered his staying at my parents place, my wrenching and time, fuel in whatever car he used that was ours, food often. He was a good guest for sure Cool

There was a pretty lively discussion about this subject at the Lucky Lab last week...

A few of us were talking,
And my opinion differed a bit from others in the group.

I was saying how my motor had been in for about ten years now,
And I was going to pull it to do the fuel tank hoses again,
And it would be good to strip it, torque the heads, leak-check and clean.

Several other guys there were like:
"Leave it in, that's a lot of wasted work", "Don't touch it",
Or my old perennial favorite:
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it".. Rolling Eyes

I really hate "If it ain't broke don't fix it".
What you get when you do that, is exactly what our OP got.

EVERY aircooler i get, immediately gets the motor out for a look-over.
Doing otherwise gets you what our OP got here.
The inch-thick pile of sludge on this motor here shows exactly what happened.
The guy wanted to get out of the first, most-basic, fundamental thing you do with these,
And that is pull the motor, clean it up, and make sure the tin is in place.

Maybe if you stay in town, and have AAA on it,
But not out on a road trip. Not in these times. Maybe in 1987.

Dunno if y'all are just used to seeing motors look like this,
Or you haven't taken any apart yet, or..?

Rear-engined air-cooled cars have this fundamental flaw:
They suck air from behind the vehicle, where all of the dirt gets kicked up by the wheels rolling on the (dirty even if it's paved) road.
If (when) they get oil leaks, the fan and dirt provide a constant supply of oil sludge.
This oil sludge fills up the cooling fins, reducing the motor's ability to cool itself.

FAILING to take your motor out and clean it is akin to failing to keep coolant in the radiator of your water-pumper.

Being involved with the hobby since way back in the 80s,
When these cars were everywhere, and people daily-drove them,
It was always just policy.
A new car comes into your life, first thing you do is take the motor out and check it.
You would never just trust that it was all right and just drive it.
It doesn't work like that. Fools get in there and mess these things up.
This fundamental fact has apparently been lost.

You would see the sorriest motors last a decent amount of time if they were dressed down and tuned.

To get one of these cars, and not even look at it, before taking it on a trip,
You can almost bet what you ae going to get..

Must.... Not... Rant.... Ranting... Ranting...

If there was one thing anyone might learn here, I'll say this is it.

… and always remember to remove the axles when towing with the rear wheels on the ground. Buses have an occasionally tendency to slip into gear and toss a rod, thus making a loose valve seat a really big pain.

Forgot to get back to you on that. Told him to pull them before he left and warned him of that happening. Don’t know if he did or not but I did explain that to him. They made it safely to MN night before last so they must have not had any issues!
