Does any one know what type/year this distributor is made? No Bosch marking, just VW all over, is it rare? Thanks for the help!

It's a Garbe Lahmyere. Bosch IIRC was having a difficult time supplying VW with distributors in the early 60's. VW developed that distributor to fill the gap in the supply chain.
The vac can ones are not so rare. Mechanical advance, Much more rare and valuable.
See page 4 of this link it has the information that you seek regarding what that distributor is.

The GL's are great distributors just little understood. The tune up parts and vacuum canisters are still readily available. GL was the back up supplier for distributors, coils, generators and starters starting in 1955 and ending sometime in the early 1970's. They are far from rare.
The sticker badges are now reproduced. The one on the right got wet being displayed at a show.
A group of GL's restored for a customer in Monterey
Caps and rotors will also fit the early Bosch 383's but the points and condenser will only work correctly with GL distributors.

The vacuum advance distributors were installed on Beetle/Ghia/Bus from the late 1950's through the 1960's in small numbers. The Bus 211 mechanical advance distributors were installed in small numbers for domestic use only.
Distributors: there were three vacuum advance versions for the beetle/Ghia/Bus.

Wow, I learn something new everyday. I had no idea IIRC was making Bosch distributors for VW back in the 1960's! _________________ Roads Scholar &
