I give up. Tried disconnecting the joint to remove the shaft, but could not get the shaft to budge. The clamp was loosened, the bolt pulled out, the shaft tuns in the coupling, but it would not come out.

So, I tried to put it back together. Lined up the divot for the bolt but could not get the two sides of the coupling to cooperate.

I did not mess with the steering box side, just the upper, which now will not slide down to allow the bolt to go through the divot in the shaft. Tried prying with screwdrivers and bars, but that did me no good.

Does anyone have any bright ideas?

I'm assuming that the steering box side has the same indexing divot that the upper side has.

I would pull the bracket that holds the tube, pull the tube off, then un bolt the coupler from the shaft end. pull the shaft out and push the end back on and put the bolt back in. plus while its apart, you can fix the horn brush

I'd slip the clamp up and stick a fat screwdriver in the open slot above the coupler and then tap and wiggle it into pry the slot of the tube open a little. Don't get violent, but with patience and a little lube you should get the steering shaft off the male coupler.

I see it has moved about 1/4 inch. You are getting there!

Unbolt the T-fitting from the rubber coupler.

Move the steering shaft away from the steering box.

Take a hammer and knock the T-fitting out of the steering shaft

You can try to heat it up carefully with a hot air gun/paint stripper.

Regards.

Bushing up top by steering wheel probably off. Loosen column, put everything back where it is supposed to be then tighten.

RARE AIR ??

what is the "T fitting"??

I see a clamp on each side of the rag joint, held tight with a U shaped bend-over strap. Buy nothing that looks like a T

Loosen the bolts holding the column to the bottom of the dash & push the steering wheel/column towards the dash & see if that's where your alignment issue is.

Loosened the column hanger, and put a 3/4" pipe nipple on the steering wheel nut and whacked it with a hammer. That shoved the shaft into the right place.

Maybe sometime in the cooler future I will attempt the shft removal again.

Thanks for all your help!!
