Hi,

This is the underside of a 1960KG Coupe, 1200, can someone please tell me what the small pipe opening you can see just behind the exhaust slightly to the right in this picture is.

I stopped to take a few photos last night and there were fumes coming out of this pipe.

Is that right, do I need to worry ?

Thanks,

Mojo

Crankcase breather tube but missing its rubber boot. The other end is topside underneath the “oel” filler cap. You can see it in this photo with it’s rubber boot

Yes it's ok to see slightly oily air coming out, that's what it's for.

Yes you should get the boot.

Back in the day, this was known as a 'road-draft breather system'...

I think a 1960 is a 36hp motor, which did not come with the rubber boot over the draft tube. That's an addition to later period engines if I'm not mistaken. Even if you have a stale air 40 horse I don't think it had the rubber boot either.

If you have noticeable fumes coming from the draft tube it's likely blow by from one or a combination of possible sources - worn/broken rings, worn valve guides, worn valve seats. I'd be a little concerned and would certainly monitor it.

I had the same problem on my 36 horse and replaced my pistons/cylinders and put on refurbished heads just this past weekend. My engine started doing the same as yours; at first just little puffs from the draft tube. Over time it was very noticeable smoke/oil vapor from the tube, and forcing oil out from behind the pulley and really making a mess. All while the car ran strong. Turns out mine had several broken compression rings.

Thanks all for your replies.

PeteSC I think you have pretty much summed up my situation, looks like a little TLC is needed.
