'72, 1700cc. So, I have a leaking fan hub seal. It looks like a job I should be able to do, but when I look at Bentley, it calls for special tools to take the hub plate off and to put the seal back in. Is it really that difficult? Maybe I'm missing something? Thanks. _________________ '72 Bus |

it can be done without the special tools but first be sure that your breather isn't plugged. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Also check the oil pressure switch for leaks. |

Sure, the MM always call out for special tools. This job doesn’t require any. Many different things can be substituted. Reminds me of working on my 1991 Toyota truck years ago. There’s an electrical box Located in the engine compartment and they wanted you to use a Toyota special shop tool to jumper two contacts in order to read the flashes on the check engine light. A paper clip worked just fine. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

VW 190 For installing the crankshaft seal in the crankshaft on the fan side
1. Plastic cap of the appropriate size, with an 8mm hole drilled in the center.
2. 8mm bolt long enough to thread into the crank>seal>plastic cap>nut
3. 8mm Nut
4. 8mm Washer
Assemble installation tool as follows.
Bolt>nut>washer>plastic cap>seal
Thread bolt into crankshaft. Then use nut to press the seal in. |

A harmonic balancer puller works just fine for pulling the fan hub. Just thread the center bolt in a bit (but not even close to being tight) for something to push against. |
