No, not a true statement at all.
and I have been using the correct lube all this time and it sticks without being flung all over. _________________ Rick

Well, I guess I won't have to resort to finding an alternative for a few years.

Actually there is a huge supply of VJU4BR8 cores. Now the vacuum canisters are still out there but the supply is drying up. Tuneup parts are another story since Bosch has continued to discontinue many of them.
While I love that you were able to take a worn part and recondition it, there are good used parts available for the next person who it looking for a easier alternative.
Rusty scale is the biggest issue. One of the parts that is often unusable is the upper shaft that has the cam and holds the springs. Rusty scale and pitting can cause the points rubbing block to wear quickly. Also i've seen some with deep gouges due to the owner not greasing the cam and the rubbing block wears down and the metal points contact the cam and damage it.
The mechanical part of the VJU4BR8 along with the mechanical only cast iron distributors are very robust.

Now Glenn, that's not fair or accurate. Muir wrote one of the best books on early VW repair. It has some misinformation and points I don't like or follow but he shouldn't be misquoted. The Bentley has errors in it too
I find plenty of cores with dried and semi dried bearing grease stuck to the inside bottom of the housings too. On a part that doesn't move much and doesn't rotate, pfff- why not. Obviously there are some applications where bearing grease is appropriate and other places where there are better choices, rather than just a blanket rejection. _________________ Roads Scholar &

When it comes to lubing the bushings of the distributor, that's one thing. Motor Oil works its way up there for that over time, but a tiny bit of grease if you've taken it apart is fine. Now, motor oil will not wick up to the points rubbing block. Me, while I certainly own a tube of GOD APPROVED BOSCH GREASE, I didn't always have it. Hell, back in the day when I was a mechanic, the only time I used "Bosch grease" was on those expensive oddball Type 2 points from the mid 70s that came with a tiny packet of grease. The rest of the time I just used moly CV joint/wheel bearing grease, applied in moderation. I never had a problem with that.
I did see a few failures where customers did not use any lube, and with the shift to plastic rubbing blocks, FAIL. _________________ Andy T.

I'm not hoarding, i plan on using it.
"they" say one tube will last a lifetime. not in my case, I go through a tube every 2-3 years depending how many distributor I rebuild. I like to use genuine Bosch parts and not resort to creative alternatives.

Does the fact that my tube of Bosch Grease is yellow make it better?
No, I think not, but then again, is my blue tube of moly any worse? it never failed for me.
