|
|
do you have a '71 sunroof bus and does it have three belly pans (centre and two outer) or two (two outers only)? what about a camper? two or three pans?
we have a '70 sunroof in the shop - it has 3 belly pans - and we have a '71 camper - it has only the outer pans, no middle one. i was surprised that the '71 camper seemed to be "missing" the middle pan, but the '71 in question is not missing anything, it is a perfect unmolested bus so it must have been built this way. also no evidence of the middle pan having been removed.
i have reference photos on my computer of a '71 camper that has the middle pan.
i took the photos myself of a customer's bus. so i wonder when or why the middle pan was omitted on a '71 sunroof or camper? _________________ SL |

Interesting, I wonder if the 71 is late production and the middle pan supply was drying up in anticipation of the 72 model? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

it isn't late, it's 2/71. i just looked again and for sure the bus was built with no middle pan. again, this is not much more than a curiosity but it's always interesting to trace the evolution of things as they changed in production. if you had asked me (before i saw this '71 in our shop) if a '71 camper had belly pans, i would answer "yes, it has three belly pans".
and to relate it to the '72, i wonder what if anything changed in the frame of a '72 camper? we have one here and without having gone over it with a fine tooth comb, it looks identical to the '71 except for the different sheet metal for the lighting and wheel arches. but there must be some structural changes made to delete the belly pans. _________________ SL

Scott, my early '71 (November 1970) Westy is in total unmolested condition body and interior wise. The only pan it has is the front splash pan. _________________ '66 Beetle

Scott,
My 68 Westfalia has the outer belly pans, no middle. I will check the 2 deluxes when the temps warm up. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

Both of my 2 early 1970 Westy Buses (8/69 & 12/69) only have the 2 outer pans no center pan. |

My march 69 westy has outer but no middle pan (or evidance of one), where I thought it would have had all 3. Was missing the front when I got her. _________________

Intriguing, I've never had a 68-71 Westfalia that was solid enough to determine if it had all it's belly pans, I'll have to do some crawling next time I see one.
I've been looking for frame/body differences on 72+ campers for years and haven't found anything significant, maybe VW considered all the lightening holes in the doors and decklid enough to balance for the missing pans. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I just checked out all the buses I have.
2 68 deluxes have no belly pans at all.
71 Westy has none either.
73 Westy has none.
73 Deluxe has none.
This is very bizarre. I was surprised that none of the deluxes had them, but there is the possibility that they were removed at some point, but I see no weld breaks. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

as far as i know, '68-'71 sunroof buses and poptop campers should always have belly pans. it seems from the above posts that MOST have only the outer pans. the L11H one in my OP has three belly pans, it seems to be the exception rather than the rule.
from '72 onwards there were not belly pans on any year or type of bus. this is not counting the late buses with BA6 heater, but this pan is a protective cover and not welded to the frame of the bus. the belly pan i am concerned with here are welded permanently to the frame as a reinforcement to the structure when the sunroof/poptop hole exists in the roof. _________________ SL |

All my westys (all pre72) have only the side belly pan's. no center one. Think if a westy is a hard top it won't have the pan's. _________________ where its cold and snowy |

Mine just has the front pan, and it's a disaster. Suppose it's time I learn how to weld. _________________ '71 Campmobile. |
