Hi, Cliff W. here from western Pa., I have a question. On the 24th of july I am flying out to MN., to pick up an antique Mercedes that I bought, and being spoiled using XM in my commuter car, is there a way to get XM/Sirius from my iPhone? The car I will be driving has the original radio, which is cool, but like I said, I have become spoiled with XM. I can keep my phone plugged in the cigarette lighter adapter, and use earbuds to hear. Please school me in what it takes to do this, being 67 years old, I am not especially high tech enough in some areas of life. Thanks. |

Sirius XM has an app in the app store. Just download it and sign in and you should be good to go. Maybe you can get a little speaker instead of earbuds though. Sounds a bit dangerous while driving. _________________ '67 Beetle L41

Thanks, your probably right about the speaker being safer, I used to use a pair of headphones back in the 70's so I could keep the windows down in my Bug, no ac in those days. |

Buy a Blue tooth adapter to plug into the existing car stereo. Then run your XM app from the phone to the car stereo.
I bet if you call Crutchfield they can hook you up quick. Both Best buy and Crutchfield have universal blue tooth boxes for the $40 -60 range. I have seen them as low as $20.
They plug into the stereo harness. All factory cars with blue tooth have one somewhere under the dash.
So instead of your head unit now being the serial numbered XM reciever....your phone is. From the phone.....you output/transmit through Bluetooth....into the stereo just like you would to a bluetooth speaker. It should be treated as a "line in".

The difference is that your Sirius/XM radio uses sat radio for the signal. Out on the open road, you always have coverage, and there is no charge besides your regular monthly/yearly bloodletting.
However, on the road, using the Sirius/XM app on your phone, you are using cell data, and LOTS of it. If you have an unlimited data plan, okay. Otherwise, that may get really expensive! And of course, if you are out of cell coverage in a remote area, you will have no signal and thus no Sirius/XM.
Better to download all the music you want, and use the aforementioned Bluetooth adapter.
Headphones and earbuds are illegal while driving in most jurisdictions. |

What radio is in the Merc and what vintage is it. You can get a BT adapter for a lot of the early Becker radios for 60's and 70's head units. |

Yep....actually.....you csn get generic BT adapters thst will fit anything if you have five minutes and a crimping tool.
And if you are going to go that far .....check this out
https://www.vaistech.com/siriusxm-sxv300-sxv200-compatibility/
These are adapter kits that fit and convert any stereo that is not XM ready
But....they are pricey.
In reality....there are MANY aftermarket stereos that are XM ready and some of the basic ones are maybe $125. Take a look at some models on line....pick one.....and go to ebay and buy one used.
Then frankenstein it to the floor or even the passenger seat in the Merc.....brand new magnetic XM car antennas are about $16 on ebay. Then call XM and open a new radio account. They have a start up deal right now....3 months for "$0".....and then cancel it when the trip is over....and resell the radio and antenna on ebay.

Yep...seen those and that, was my first thought a few posts back. As others have mentioned it can have some dead spots occasionally and may cost a little in cell service .but for one drive.....and maybe an extra $20 on the phone bill.....its the best bet. Ray |

I am trying to work around the original Becker Europa, there is something about using an oem radio/stereo that makes me happy. May have it pulled eventually to get upgraded to mp3,bluettoth, etc. but will want to put original back in the car. Just need to do the phone app thing for a one way ride from Mn. to Pittsburgh. Thanks for the suggestions. |

Do you know for a fact the speaker cones of the car aren't shredded after all these years? Bummer to buy equipment and then find out you still can't play anything. |

Much thanks for all the suggestions, that's what makes this web site so good. At this point I don't know anything for sure, except that the original radio works, I will know more on the 24th when I fly to Mn. to pickup my car, and drive the 1000 miles home. Lots to consider, more ways to go than I thought. Being 67 years old, I am not up on a lot of the tech advances. |

It probably goes without saying, but I'd drive without music for the first hour, until it's had a good long hot run, so you can listen for expensive noises! |
