I just got my gas door bumpers and I am pretty sure they insert in this direction. Please confirm on direction and do I grab the end with a plier (flat no groves) to pull through (guess I'm just weak)?

Have you considered simply starting with a nicer bus? I don't know what your skills are, but the race is easier if you can see the finish line. If you are not a runner, don't start off doing a marathon. |

I put mine in the opposite way, with the cone facing out and the flat side towards the motor. A little lube and pliers to pull it through did the job. It wasn't easy but then again you don't want them coming out! _________________ Oil Capital Air Cooled

Did a search of the gallery for "bus gas door" with no luck. Then tried "bus gas cap" and got this:

Hi Linda,
Yep! The photo that Barb and Eric posted shows the way they should be installed. I usually start to push them into the hole from the inside towards the outside. I place a finger on the flat head of the rubber grommet (a little smear of lube around the conical shaped shaft of the rubber grommet that has to squeeze through that hole in the sheet metal is helpful) and while keeping outward pressure on the grommet with that finger, I use either my fingers to wiggle the cone or a small flat blade screwdriver to help press and pry the rubber through the sheet metal. Pry and pull the rubber all the way 360 degrees around the cone of rubber pulling a little more each time until the grommet groove snaps into place. Be careful not to slip with the screwdriver and scratch your paint (ask me how I know that).
Then test the fit of the door in the closed position. If the rubber is too tall and the door isn't closed flush with the body, then carefully use a new razor blade to shave off a little rubber at a time off the top (outward) of the cone until the door shuts flush.
Job done!

Thanks, Eric&Barb, yes that that was my first step I typed "bus gas door" yes I should have tried bus gas cap. Now when I see bus gas cap results I see flat bumpers.
Thanks BulliBill for the extensive answer.

Linda- as suggested- they do pull through toward you. No tools are needed and I don't know a more appropriate way to say this other than to just say it (please forgive me)...
Warm it in your hand for a minute and pull it through like a, ahem, titty twister. Pull and flick it side to side and around. No lube required- just hand warmth. _________________

You should try them with the cone part coming out at first. Those replacement ones allow the door to sit flush that way out. If you don't like it then you can tweak them out from the inside and reverse them. But then the door strikes the paint when it slams. Those original ones that look like yours but going inward have a thicker bumper. |

Bottom front and back, top front and back.
I’d bet the ranch these are original.

Exactly. They pull through from the inside out. They all start off life as cones and crush to the trumpet mute shape. They provide rattle free pressure against the gas door latch- exactly how the bumpers on an early beetle's glove box does. They keep both items from shaking themselves open. But you cats might not know about them there beetles.
I can further add through extensive rubber nipple research that the WCM bumpers are softer than WW's, but have a slightly looser fit where they mount. What they do in VWs is a matter for another forum. _________________
