so after seeing the add on the back of the august 2018 hot VWs magazine for the new empi 40K carbs I wanted to here some of the samba members opinions considering the HPMX (weber clones) and D series (dellorto clones) carbs did well.

I can't comment much, other than that Kaddie Shack seems to offer setup and some modifications to them-

https://shop.kaddieshack.com/EMPI-40K-Kadron-Style-Dual-Carburetor-Kit-Type-1-43-4429.htm

I love my Kadrons, but with the price of the new sets I would still rather sink that money into a new set of HPMX or used IDFs considering the price. Or, save some money and just wait for a good used set to come up, as you can get a killer deal if you look around...

I'm running 40hpmx, working quite well considering jetting without a wideband.

For what the kits cost I'd rather grab a used set, and take a gamble on needing the throttle shafts rebushed. You'll be well served running nicer linkage anyway, and you can find decent sets of carbs for ~$225 pretty frequently. A quick teardown and freshen up and a better linkage arrangement and you're in business.

I love my kadrons, but I wouldn't pay that sort of money for a new set, in my opinion that money is better spent on a pair of IDF style copies. The new sets would need to be about $100-150 cheaper to be an attractive option, IMHO. The twist linkage is a good upgrade, I personally love my CSP linkage setup.

I'm not a hardcore "original or bust" sort of guy, but I have a soft spot for original style Kadrons Smile

Until you spend the money to get a used set in proper working order, the new ones are not that expensive. And I know that Empi has a bad rap, but I have been very happy with their latest HPMX carbs. Have not heard many grumble about them.

And not discounting folks like Kaddie Shack. I have installed several of his sets, but if you know how to set up and tune them, I have gotten comparable performance on off the shelf new ones. Just sayin. And I probably will try a set of the 40Ks next time I need a set.

Jeff at The Kaddie Shack has a video up of them putting a pair on Miguels car and running them down the track. Straight outta the box and a slight tune. Seemed to work okay but needed more fine tuning.
