Is there any reason why you couldn't divorce the ECU from the unit and say mount it in the intake air passage closer to the inside of the vehicle? That way it's in a relatively sealed space with a source of cool(er) air passing over the components.

And heck, with a little bit of splicing you could possibly use the Chinese mobo+wiring+controller to revive a dead Espar or Webasto. Wonder if there's an equivalent parts source for the Chinese coolant parking heaters -- I've got a used Hydronic B5WSC with a fried motherboard, and the replacement Eberspacher controller is 3X what the entire heater cost, including shipment from Berlin.

That FB group is VERY active and has a wealth of information available about these units. They seem hugely popular in the UK.

You could probably extend the wires and do exactly that, but the ECU gets continual airflow from the fan where it's mounted inside the heater, so I don't really see what the advantage would be. Unless you're really really pressed for space, mounting it inside shouldn't be any big deal. It's not really any bigger than a Propex HS2000 -- longer front-to-back but narrower in width -- and people manage to cram those into amazingly snug "wasted space" locations in their campers already.

I plan on mounting it below my EV cargo floor and tying the intake and output hoses into the factory rear heater plenum. I've been fretting about how to weatherproof the package, so mounting the ECU elsewhere is probably my best bet. The heater unit itself just requires wires for the fan, glowplug and temp sensor, so extending the pigtails doesn't seem too problematic.

Makes sense. I'd think that as long as you aren't fording rivers, treating the board with a conformal coating and sealing the case seams with silicone would probably be enough, but moving the electronics entirely would be even better...

And yes on the FB group, very active. It was what I learned from lurking there for a while that convinced me to pull the trigger on mine over the summer. No regrets...

No problem, glad to share what I know .. little as that may be at times. I *did* somehow manage to learn *something* with an electronics professor father in the house, despite my best efforts at the time. Laughing

Thanks for everyone’s perspective.
I’ve found an all aluminum 2k version with a remote and it says it can be used for high altitude above 4500m. I will be unconscious and covered with diesel soot but my body will be warm.
I will report back.

I’ve found the Espar replacement parts to be spendy so I thing the Germans are on to us. I will upgrade fuel line, filter and probably glow plug.

I followed your link and bought one of these for $682 shipped from Russia. Pretty good deal if its the real McCoy. So far communication's been good and it shipped fast. We'll see.

Are these able to be externally mounted? i.e. under the floor? Looks like I'd need to create a box around it to keep off any water...

The installation instructions of the Webasto Airtop states:

Quote:
If it is installed on the exterior ensure that the heater is fitted in a position
where it is protected from splashing water and spray.

The heater must be installed in such a way that no water can ingress into
it if the vehicle travels through a water hazard for which that vehicle is licensed.

..so yeah, a box is probably a great idea. I'd apply the same rule-of-thumb to the Espar, Snugger, Planar and the generic Chinese heaters.

I've been trying to think of a box design that allows relatively easy access to the unit for servicing. I think laying it over on its side with the intake/exhaust tubes sticking out horizontally makes the most sense with this procedure in mind--assuming of course, that doesn't mess with fuel metering.

When I was researching the mounting underneath, I found these pre-made boxes. They are available from a number of places. I just picked a link at random so you can get flavor. This one is $167, which is in the ball park of what I was finding:

https://www.heatso.com/external-mounting-box-for-a...XoQAvD_BwE

Also, in one of videos I watched the man said if you mount the unit on its side you have to make sure the glow plug is on the top and not on the bottom. He said it will get flooded on the bottom.

And the Webasto instructions I downloaded suggest the box if it is mounted on top of a vehicle. Underneath the vehicle it just wants it above the waterline if you are crossing a stream, and out of the splash zone.

Here is a link to a mounting bracket for a T5 which gives ideas:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/192718446617?ViewItem=&item=192718446617

Edit: Here is a better link to Butler Technik website with a flurry of mounting options, including a box that looks like it should hang from below, with a side access panel:

https://www.butlertechnik.com/installation-accessories-c63/mounting-accessories-c117

And here is a link to the installation instructions for the Webasto Airtop 2000 ST, which is the clone I am talking about as it is on its way Very Happy

https://www.butlertechnik.com/downloads/Webasto_Airtop_2000ST_Installation_Instruction.pdf

Hey Casey,
Have you thought about mounting the heater under the passenger front seat?

Not sure if there is enough clearance but if there is you could keep it indoors and safe while using mostly unused space. wait a moment, is the gastank directly under the seat?

The tank stretches across the vehicle from side to side under the front seats. I thought about putting it under the seat, but I don't want to give up that storage space or have any smells inside the van.

This is essentially how I plan on installing mine. I probably would do the same on a Vanagon.

Food for thought -- this was posted to the FB group in a thread where someone was asking for mounting ideas for their T4. Looks like there's just enough room under the RH seat to mount and apparently have the exhaust and intake piping clear the gas tank. Not sure if they used the 5KW or 2KW version though...
