Has anyone had any experience (either good or bad) with these tires in the link below? I'm looking for new tires for my stock '70 bug. I live in Louisiana where it's generally hot, and I'm looking for a general tire for my weekly outings. No need for performance tires. I'm just looking for a decent budget tire. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

They look like the "Classic" brand that I got from Les Schwab, the top of the line tire store out here in the PNW. They are fine. _________________ 1972 1302

Yeah, I think it's probably the same tire made by Vanderbilt just with different names. Thanks for the feedback! |

I can't remember where I bought these, but they were a great deal for the price. _________________ AshMan40

Thanks, Cusser.
The owner's manual for the '70 says the tires are Ply Bias 5.60-15. Were those original size tires more closely related to a radial 155 tire instead of the 165s that most folks seem to have these days? Are we mostly using 165s because they're easier to get than 155s? |

Basically, yes. It seems VW 'updated' to the 165 on later models though too.
From the opening post of the "official tire guide thread"

The stock Beetle tire size was:
Bias plies: 5.60x15
Radial Tires: 155R15, then 165R15
The "R" is 82 series so an equivalent would be 165/82/15, most people use 165/80/15 as that is what is currently available. |

I had the same tires on my stock rims. Good tires. No issues.
FYI. Bias-ply and Radial tires are two different types of tires. Thats why there are different numbering sequences noted. _________________ Jimbo

Thanks for this info and the answer. I thought that might be the case. I'm glad to confirm it.
I have a buddy who just put 155s on his '69 bug, and he says he loves how it rides. I just can't see spending an additional $160 or so for that. I think I'm just going to stick with my tried and true 165s.

Thanks, Jimbo. I'll be sure to stick with the radials. |

+1 on the Nankang CX668s...I just bought a set for my new '68 and don't have many miles on them but they road just fine and I felt the car drove nicely with them. My mechanic had zero problems mounting and balancing them. They're made in Taiwan, not mainland China, so quality should (in theory) be better. Time will tell.
The 165s were just a wee too big for the spare tire well though but fortunately they make the same tire in a 145 size that fits great. |

I didn't even think about a 165 not fitting as a spare. My spare (dead as can be) is probably an original 5.60-15. I guess I'll need to look into a 145 for that job. Thanks for the advice.
One last question: Has anyone heard of 155/80R15s that are worth looking into without breaking the bank? (That seems like it would address my spare issue too.) I'm a fan of the skinnier tire look, but I'm an even bigger fan of not paying through the nose for tires! |

I've been looking at tires for my 74 fat chick vert. If I buy a set, they will likely be the Nexen SB802 in 165/80R15. They generally get decent reviews and are reasonably priced. |
