Want to remove my hood for painting but am concerned about removing the four phillips head screws that hold the hinges to the hood without opening a can of worms doing so. How do others do this?

Have a hand impact driver but worry I will deform the hood using it and have a battery impact driver I would need to buy a bit for, but am concerned I might will just end up stripping the screws heads or breaking them off if I use it.

I have always used the hand impact on hood and door hinges. Newer damaged body parts and never had a screw that I could not remove. Air or battery impact will strip or break the bolts.

The first step is getting the correct Phillips head bit (I cannot remember offhand if it is a #2 or #4). Anyways I got my at the local Home Depot. It is a bit that attached to a socket ratchet. By pushing down with my body weight and turning the ratchet handle I was able to break looks the screws on mine.

If you are the kind of guy who can't own too many tools, check this video:

Note: This is not an impact driver per se.
The force from the air tool is straight down into the fastener.
The only twisting force is applied by hand using the little handle.

hey Wildthings,

If you can get something like kano-kroil or some other favorite 'nut buster' on the screw threads somehow, it may help and give it time to soak in, as much time as you can.
I found that out on brake bleeders, a old bronco I had it took over 2 weeks to get one to break loose.
anyways...

If the screw heads are painted over you may not can get the lubricant to the threads, not sure if you can get to them with the hood open or not.

I'd like to replace mine with stainless, I found some for the windshield frame but not yet for the 4 for the hood, I'm sure a place like Fastenal could probably find something but i've not tried yet.

Hope you get em' out!

T

Got them out without too much trouble, they wouldn't move with serious pounding on the hand impact driver when I had first tried to remove them with only having let the penetrant to do its thing for an hour or so, but after hitting them again and again with penetrant for several day, from both above and below they came fairly easily.

Its too late to help now, but I found that smearing valve grinding compound in the head of the screw worked great for getting a good and non-slipping grip with the screwdriver bit.
