I recently bought a Meyers Manx Dune Buggy and am now redoing parts of it. The wiring is bad, so will rewire it all. The engine leaks but runs fine, although it is too slow. So I want to replace or rebuild the engine.

I need to figure out how much HP I want. Since it is a stock 1600 dual port engine, it is a slug from what I am used to. Is one 100 hp enough? Or 200 better? Will the frame handle 4 time the HP without modifications? How much HP will a stock manual trans from a 68 Beetle handle?
Is it better to have my engine rebuilt or buy one already done and tuned and bolt it in.

Any suggestions will be helpful.

thanks-

Manx cars are so light, a good 1600 will push one along nicely. Going fast cost $$, if you just want a performance boost that will not grenade your trans a 1776, 1835, or 1915 would be an easy update. A 1776 with a 110 cam and dual carbs would be a nice bump.

Some people can break a crowbar in a sandbox though, so a 1600 will still break a trans if you drive it like a maniac.

My 1600 DP pushed my Manx clone around the city just fine due to it's light weight. On the highway though is was a bit anaemic just like the Bug it came from. Much above 75 mph and it was struggling.

I now have a lightly warmed over type 4 engine in it, possibly 100 hp and it is much better on the highway - all I need for sure - but it is not going to blow the doors off the current factory muscle cars.

Personally I think anything over about 150 hp in one of these short wheel based, rear heavy, plastic toy cars is going to be an accident looking for a place to happen anyway! 150 hp used to be the figure quoted as the practical limit the stock sedan transaxle was good for.

Houston, huh? I'm surprised you'll be able to get a title for it. Better check that before you start investing in engine mods.
