What color was the new OEM transaxle fluid for the 2001 VW New Beetle?
Thanks!

Welcome to The Samba!
It should look like you just took a leak after drinking too much beer at a sports bar... about the same price too.
It's very clear & yellowish in color. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

What color should it be if it's time to change it? Our Beetle's fluid is a chocolate brown in color. |

How many miles are on it? Are you thinking about changing it because the transmission is acting up?
If it's over 150,000 & it's never been changed, you might start having problems if you change the fluid.
If the transmission is getting flaky, changing the fluid is not likely to help it & it just might get worse.
Otherwise, it would be a good time to service it. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Our Beetle has 180,000 miles on it.
Its tranny went out 2.5 years and 10,000 miles ago, at which time it was replaced with a used tranny from a junkyard by a local mechanic who specializes in VW Beetles. The 'new' tranny began having issues right away. It was slow to shift gears for some reason; the tranny’s gears seemed to stick, or to be slipping.
Anyway, the issue only got worse from there, progressing to getting stuck in 3rd gear. Other times, she'd shift from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, but then never shift from 3rd to 4th.
However, for most of this year (6k to 8k miles of driving), our Beetle's transaxle has worked fine. She's been a little slow to shift at times, but nothing like before.
Until a couple weeks ago. Now, she's exhibiting a similar problem as before, with a slight variation: she won't upshift from one gear to the next unless I bring engine RPMs to 4,000.
Any ideas or recommendations? |

Convert it to a manual. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.
