Sorting through my engine bay wiring in preparation for my engine going back in, I can't seem to find the oil pressure switch wire. Does that wire come out of the bunch of wires that come out of the left side of the upper engine bay, or does it come off the coil (+) with the fuel cut-off and automatic choke wires? I can't figure out what happened to it? A picture of it going from the oil pressure switch to where ever it goes would be helpful.

It does NOT come off the coil + terminal, do NOT do that. You will create a direct short to ground with the ignition on which will smoke the un-fused coil power wire all the way back to the ignition switch. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

Yes, yes, I already have a print out of the wiring diagram which I have used with good success to label and sort out the wires in the engine bay. I'm saying I can't physically find that wire either coming out of the harness, or off the coil.
I did find another set of wires, with connectors on each end, that looks exactly like the one that comes off the right side tail light connector that's used to supply power to the license plate. Is there one of those used on the left side for something, or do I just have a duplicate? _________________ scrapyards are for quitters

Originally it came from the upper left, it was in the same plastic sheath as the coil wire bundle, when that bundle got close to the the coil the oil pressure switch wire spliced off, it would of been in a smaller plastic sheath.
Anything on the right is for lights. |

OK, I know the smaller bundle you're talking about that splits off of the Alternator wires. I suppose it's possible the electro cut-off/automatic choke wires, which are spliced into one push-on connector, might have gotten plugged into the end of the oil pressure wire over the years during the rebuild. I was trying to determine if the oil pressure switch wire was one of the pins in the test socket, so I could do a continuity test on the wires to find it that way. More leads to try out when I get home anyway. _________________ scrapyards are for quitters

I think it is a blue wire. |

First picture is about the best I have of original, you can see the blue wire make the exit from harness right before the coil, about the same time as the coil wires.
Next set is the compartment now, you can still see the blue wire exit the bundle heading to the oil pressure switch.
I have eliminated the test plug, capped and bundles the wires out of the way.

Thanks Busman, I'll start cleaning all the years of grime off the wires and look for that blue wire when I get home. I'm betting I plugged the cut-off/auto choke wire combo into the oil pressure wire so I wouldn't loose them when I pulled the engine out years ago. As a side note, I went to college in Norman! _________________ scrapyards are for quitters

OK, got it sorted. It's what I thought. I plugged the cut-off/auto choke wire combo into the oil pressure wire so I wouldn't loose them when I took the engine out. What, that was only 18 years ago! After a good cleaning, it did turn out to be a faded dark green wire. Engine wiring is now ready to go. Thanks for the helpful responses. _________________ scrapyards are for quitters

I'm having the same issue locating the oil pressure hookup as well and my engine is still in!
Been like this since I got it recently.
Only wire straight off harness is the stripped end one? Not sure if I just need to add a female end and connect to it? |

That’s it. The wire has lived a long, hot life and is showing its age, going gray! If you ground it with the key on, the oil pressure warning light will illuminate. If I am wrong, you will pop a fuse! _________________ Jimbo

Buzzerbug74, the green and red wire coming out of that sheath is your oil pressure warning light wire, as shown on K3, current track 37 above. The green and white is Coil (-) to diagnostic plug, and can remain safely clipped.
Here is the key to the wiring diagram posted above.
Here is how to read the late style wiring diagrams:
Good luck!

Thanks! It's a '74 super, I'll definitely do the swap and see how things go from there |

Mine was also a 74 super and turned out to be a badly faded dark green wire. I couldn't make out the red markings on the wire, but I'm sure they're on there. _________________ scrapyards are for quitters

During my 1970's resurrection 1.5 years ago, I found my oil sender wire was harder than a teenager at his first Ann-Margret movie in the 1960s !!!
I soldered a new wire extension on, used heat shrink tubing; better than a crimp-type butt connector. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each.
