Wanted to rebuild this engine for my wife’s 65 vw bug, but not sure of the motor size?

Originally a 1200 40hp engine, the only certain way to tell what it is now is to measure the bore and stroke. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Ancillary parts such as distributor, carburetor, air filter still say that it could be a 40 hp, 1200. The generator reveals that it's still 6 volts. _________________ Roads Scholar &

The intake ports appear to go strait down into the head, so it appears to be a 1200cc 40 horse engine. The block number agrees, it looks like a factory stamping and the number dates to September 1964 (1965 model year.) It might have a big bore kit in it to bump it to 1400cc. _________________

Thank you, I’m going to start taking it apart to see if everything looks ok, I’m not sure if the 1200 get cracks behind #3 or not. I want to boost it up so it has a bit more power. Not sure if there’s a way to put Daul ports heads on it. Or maybe just some mild single port head mods and a small cam.
I could just put a larger engine in it but I want to see what I can do with this small 1200 as a challenge for fun. I’m not worried about the cost it’s more about how or if I could get it to zip down the road. I am thinking a efi system for easy starts and smooth running.
My goal is more authority in power but I’m not taking about a race motor, just a smooth power band, it’s for my wife car I’m restoring for her.
So EFI done correctly with the stock air cleaner, maybe converted with a air filter or foam inside. I like the looks of this style of engine. |

Maybe check the vintage speed forum here. The performance section will have you building a 2 liter with a turbo. _________________ 1960 Indigo Blue Ragtop (Blue Barry)

Agreed, I would say a 1600 would be wonderful enough for it, it's what I put in my 67 in a mostly stock form and I love it. Though I'm building a more period correct single port with a set of Kads though for mine. Good luck with the build. _________________ It's not the fall that hurts, it's the sudden stop at the bottom.

in the first pic it looks like they used red silicone to seal the case halves just so you know that is a bad thing and if you split the case that is not what you should use |

What sort of power do you think I could get from a mild built 1200 with a single EFI setup |

Sounds like you should just go with a 1600, cheaper easier to get parts for. _________________ Roads Scholar &
