Tell me about it! Dead battery sabotaged me. All that testing the lights and gauges killed it. I've learnt to test all the electrics every time when I work on that crow's nest of wires behind the dash. Killed the battery in the process. You can always push-start your Karmann Ghia, and by the time you're finished with your long scenic drive the battery should be all charged up again.
One of the many advantages to having an old, light car with a manual transmission. |

Push the Ghia to start it?
Oh the indignity! (I once had to sit in my topless 993 cabriolet and suffer the comments and laughs of a packed open-air restaurant while the waiters were pushing to help me start the Porsche. I now have nightmares of me naked in the Porsche and everybody laughing.)
I did go for a drive. The speedo works. Emiko feels good - responsive, smooth, even comfortable. My wife works 3 days a week, so that gives me ample time to go out and... just drive.
With a smile on my face like a dog with its head out the window of a Ford 250. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Congrats on getting the elusive speedo. Maybe your next quest could be for one of those Sperrwolf locking/ignition shifters
I'm curios though about the orange dash at 50, I presume that is the 2nd to 3rd shift mark, But why not have the others shifts marked ? I noticed it on the 72+ Kph speedo as well. The earlier speedos had each shift marked and the 67-71 US market speedos don't have any. So why is that one mark so important? |

I too would love to have one of those Sperrwolf things but the pricing I've seen is orbital.
My '66 has the earlier style metric speedo, also with the mark at 50kph. I've driven European cars of other marques, namely Peugeot and Opel and many of those , even modern ones, would have a mark at 50kph.
Here is a Photo from the gallery of a Vanagon metric speedo with the Shift marks AND the 50kph mark
I understand the accepted European "in town" speed limit is 50kph. All of that makes me think it is a European standard.

I bought a refurbished km/h speedo for my 1962 from seller coupe-toni in Germany on eBay. They have lots of different types and the price wasn’t too bad (still not cheap) and the shippping is very reasonable. _________________ 1962 Karmann Ghia

Good to hear that. Yep, nothing marked in Euros comes cheap for us here Down Under (and in my case, Down Under Down Under). _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

His shop on ebay is "Klassik Armaturen Todt"
I was searching for speedo glass and crome rings and found his site (he has them). He also has modification of speedos (from MPH to KMH and for different sized tires) stated on his ebay shop profile.
I asked him if he could refurbish and modify my new (thanks Kai) 1957 speedo/tacho from MPH to KmH and refurbish 1958 clock and he said he can.
I will report on how it goes and on the price when it is done. _________________ 1958 Karman Ghia i.e. my rustbucket project

The conversion from mph to kph should be quite easy. I've taken a good look at the internals of the '68 speedos I have and it appears that all that is required is:
1. a kph faceplate/dial
2. a replacement worm-gear for the odometer
If you need to modify further for non-standard sized tyres the process would be more complicated. I have a gear that fits between the speedo cable and the back of the speedo to adjust the reading by 9.2% to accommodate the slightly smaller front tyres I have fitted. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly
