And I AM BACK
Hey fellow airheads, it has been 4 years or so since I posted anything but I have been lurking and reading needless to say I missed my Ghia's so against my better wisdom or lack thereof I adopted my 3rd Karmann Ghia a 1966 internet rescue.
I have not named her yet, she is rough around the edges and has been molested but for the most part still all there. Learning from past mistakes I am approaching this restoration differently this time, no more brand new everything so whatever can be fixed and restored will stay but as usual, I will be doing everything myself including the paint and bodywork. To start with it came with a Weber that had the wrong jets and a manifold that was missing the preheating tubes, the muffler was shot so I rebuilt the carb, changed the jets and replaced both the intake and muffler. I also added a PerTronix distributor and replaced the clunky high pressure fuel pump he had with the correct one for the carb. Spark plugs, valve adjustment, brand new starter and it came back to life purring.
I really like the new Bosch starter, it is a lot smaller in size but it starts the engine right away and in my opinion it is a lot less noisy.

Everything is getting a coat or two of Corroseal Rust Converter for now until I decide if I am taking the body of or not
couple of pictures of what I am dealing with
WHY!!!
Seals, new ball joints, ball bearings and drop spindles in the work

Car actually looks quite solid in the rockers and floors. Hope you get it driveable as planned. Good work with the engine so far.
Your shifter looks like either a Superior or a Sparkomatic, both being popular units in the '70's. |

Thanks for the good wishes, rockers are good except for couple of small rust through spots that I need to address on both sides. The floor has been replaced by the PO using sheet metal screws so I will need to weld them in and remove the screws. Overall the body and the untouched nose is in a good shape.
Good catch on the shifter it’s MR Gasket, I like it so it’s staying minus the knob. _________________ 69 Ghia Autostick (Also Gone)

I like this car, lots of what looks like Sea Blau under the paint. Too bad they welded the side trim holes and made off with the inside door trim.
Drop spindles? |
Indeed.
Filling the holes with Bondo is the proper procedure. |

Yep one of the few odd things that was done to the poor car, I was hoping to find the dash trim tucked somewhere inside or the inside door trim but no luck and why weld a trim hole but not the floor pans is beyond me.
Nonetheless for a Midwest car it’s a solid foundation and it shall return to its original beauty.
Yep drop spindles and the back will be adjusted appropriately once I sort out the transmission and engine seals. The whole brake system will be replaced plus a dual master cylinder. I will get it roadworthy and drive it this fall then get the bodywork started. _________________ 69 Ghia Autostick (Also Gone)

Stock beam? ...may need small tire. |
Yes, I was thinking 175/55R15 or 145sr15 haven’t got there yet. Wheels will need to be replaced I am not a big fan of EMPI fake chrome stock wheels.
So I was just getting ready to replace the tie rod ends and my right is pressed in no threads! I don’t remember that on my 69 or 68 and I don’t see a mention of it in the manual. Is it the original 66 tie rod? _________________ 69 Ghia Autostick (Also Gone)

IIRC the ball joint drop spindles use the 68 and later larger diameter ends. |
Yes I Bought the later outer tie rod ends but I was talking about the inner end with the steering damper it’s pressed in the tie rod not bolted. I will get a picture uploaded. _________________ 69 Ghia Autostick (Also Gone)
