Hi folks, I have my engine down to replace my mounts and figured I should do some basic PM while in there. Of course, I’ll cover the basics like oil, plugs, wires. But I want to relocate the fuel filter to under the car. I know in my “bay window days”there was a lot of concern about the lacking quality of the available fuel hoses. As a culture, Bay owners largely swore by Gates Barricade. What is the consensus on using braided lines with the ethanol fuels we have today?
I can get 3/16” barricade which is ethanol safe but it doesn’t have the “look”of the nice woven lines.
I’m thinking this is a safety first type issue.
Thoughts?

There's quite a bit of discussion on this if you don't mind wading through a search, but the gist is basically it's OK to use the old woven stuff if you inspect and replace the lines frequently, but you're better off with modern ethanol-compliant hose of the correct diameter for your application. Use clamps at all hose junctions, and it's encouraged to safety wire the connections at the carb and fuel pump where press-in fittings are used.

You don’t have to decide between the old woven stuff and the modern hose that doesn’t look like the original. They now make braided fuel line that’s ethanol resistant. You can by the clamps there too.

Thanks mukluk! I know it was a hot topic in the Bay forums too. I had genuinely used the search, and found so many topics - and posts buried within other topics. It was tough to hash out if fuel lines are as much a concern on carbureted cars as they were on the fuel injected ones. In NY everything has this damn ethanol in it - we just can't escape it.

I just bought 3 meters! I've only used Gates Barricade in the past, I'm interested to see how the quality is on this stuff. I also picked up some ABA clamps and will wire in the hose to the pump and carb!

I'm still getting used to early beetle life!
You guys rock!

Nothing fancy required, just lace through/around the hose clamp and hook the other end under one of the carb screws or around the fitting boss.
