Post pics of your own when you buy them. In the mean time, I'll stick with a projector style if I can get it.

On a lighter note, I like the red seats! Especially with the white piping...

That is the cutoff of them in my Beetle, behind the lowes on 249.

I haven't had time to take new photos, as my beetle has been in the garage for more than a year. (Just got the new engine running)

You are welcome to come by and check them out in person if you want?

I keep my vw's mostly stock and 6v, not really into any 12v VW's, and would never never put ugly bug eye lights on a VW. that cut off looks nice

I've got projector retrofits on my daily

enough about the damn lights...

Old Guy - seats should be lowbacks, are these what came with it? Little safer I suppose

I bought them local for about $120 USD. I have the original low backs but
a) They are shot.
b) Wife is a physio, one of her concessions is that we get high backs. She deals with whip lash people all the time at work
c) The original cable release system is long gone and these have the release on the side so it works.

If I have time maybe I will rebuild the original ones but for now this was a quick and dirty solution.

This morning's activities was the right hand rear torsion bar bushings. Fun times.

I think this was the original shock. It is done. I already ordered new ones last week.

I was surprised how easily all the nuts and bolts came out. I doubt this car has ever seen winter salt.

Theses are the old bushings next to the new ones. You can see how it has 'cold flowed' a bit. On my 911 this phenomenon caused me to have to replace two front torsion bars because they started to rub against metal.

I had to pull the bottom fender bolts off to be able to remove the entire assembly. While I was there.....

Close enough

These pliers came in handy to rotate the bushings to align them perfectly.

And done. Now the cover plate doesn't rub against the tube.

This afternoon I have to do the other side. Hopefully it goes quicker. The hardest part was getting the spring plate back one.

nice work. For me, the hard part is usually getting the cover back on with all the bolts... I have even used longer bolts to get it close, then back them out and put the correct ones in.

Yes, yes, and yes. I also used dishsoap.

The problem I had was that the longer bolts had a 17mm head vice a 15mm head. Tight clearance in the corners and difficult to get a socket on. I also had a problem with one of holes, a thread got damaged I think, I couldn't get the short bolts to work. Oh well, I left a longer bolt in. It sticks out through the other side, will probably be more difficult to remove in 10 years.

The other side worked out a little better for some reason.

I'm not sure what I will do tomorrow. Not working, wife is gone, and parts didn't arrive today. Tie rod ends maybe.

So doing a bit of nothing in the garage today took a look at the thermostat I bought of the internet a while ago. I noticed this.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

It appears to be the temperature for a FI car. If I run this in my carburettor car will I be okay or is it the equivalent of dividing by zero?

It'll be fine. you won't notice the extra 5 degrees in the summer. The main idea is to have 1 in place for quicker warm up to operating temp. There's a lot of engines out there (FI and carbed) without a thermostat at all, that have been running for years too.

Cool. Well, I'll keep my eye out for a used one in any case.

Tonight it took me almost 2hrs to get to this point.

The inners refused to release from the pitman arm. Cool, just take the pitman arm with it. Nope, for that I need to rotate the steering box to get enough room, for that I need to remove the steering coupler.

It was an exercise in denial and frustration. Denying that I would have to do so many steps and then frustrated in that I have to do so many steps.

I called it a night at that point. I have a feeling that the ends aren't going to come out easily. I soaked the ends in penetrating fluid but I'm almost convinced that it doesn't really do anything.

So about old brake lines........this is what they can do. Swell up on the inside. This is the worse I have ever seen one. For fun I hooked it up to an air compressor at 120 PSI and it wouldn't let any air through.

Before they completely swell shut they will almost act as a one way valve allowing pressure from the MC to go to the brakes but not to return. This causes dragging brakes.

Rubber brake lines should be replaced every so often regardless of how they 'look'.

shhhhhh Shhh

I once bought a '64 sunroof notchback cheap and I lowballed him. It had been sitting, stuck, his wife was mad, bad transmission, but ran and was complete and the pan and body matched. We dragged it out of the garage and up on the trailer.

boy was he pissed when his wife saw me driving the car that very night. We cut the brake lines, put new ones in, and hit the town in my new ride Laughing

Cool story. I don't normally have such luck.

What I am now a little worried about is the MC. Is there a straight off the shelf replacement for these?

https://www.vwispwest.com/311611015J.html

i bought a new one from CIP several years ago, we couldn't get it to build pressure, so i pulled an OG master off a parts car in a field, cleaned it up checked the bore and put a new seal kit in it from the FLAPS and it was good. My guess is the one from CIP was sitting on the shelf too long. The FLAPS had the FAG kit on the shelf , but they had to order the ATE kit for the new cylinder

Or try your local friendly auto parts store for one. I've done that several times in the past. Recently, I've had Jim Adney rebuild them for me.

Well, I ordered a new master cylinder. Maybe I can rebuild the old one as well. It's pretty rusty on the outside though.

The only thing I won't be touching it seems are the ball joints and the front bushing/needle bearings. The ball joints seem fine, I think. As for the needle bearings/bushings should I just let sleeping dogs lie?

As for the rear I replaced the torsion bar rubber bushings. I am going to replace the CV boots. Missing anything back there?

for now... get it driving a bit. They aren't readily available. Ball joints are bolt on, so easyish later if you need to do them

you did shocks... I'd look at the trans mounts, they go bad/sag. bad ground straps do funny things on these cars, so check/clean/replace that while you're back there. Starter bushing if the engine is out. Or plan to switch to an automatic starter, it's self supporting and doesn't need a bushing

Funny thing happens up here in a month or two. I don't think I will be driving it much until the spring. I'm just trying to keep myself busy/productive.

Shocks are sitting in a box. They needed to be replaced. I can compress the rear ones with no effort. Extending them takes a bit of effort. That would make for a miserable ride.

I've ordered trans mounts. Are you talking about the two at the back of the trans or the one by the nose?

I'll look into starter bushings or the automatic starter.

Well I didn't do much today. I did manage to find all 4 grease zerks on the front beam after digging around in undercoating that someone sprayed.

I tried to put in my new tie rod ends. I ordered two incorrectly so I now I need to order another two. Oh well I guess.
