Would anyone have a link to a good clear exploded diagram of the carb for a 1955 Beetle? We just finished up a head job and reinstall of a Buddy's engine, got it started, and am having a few issues with the engine that weren't there before. When you push the gas pedal all the way to the floor, fuel squirts upwards out of the carb rather than downwards into the carb. Is there some sort of cap on top of the emulsion tube that could have come loose and been swallowed by the engine? Could the tube itself have come loose and been swallowed as well? I know nothing about these early carbs, but figure that the fuel squirting upwards might not be "normal."

Need some help, hopefully a good diagram will explain things. Any suggestions or explanations or whatever would also be much appreciated. Thanks, TC—

If the bug is not running, the fuel tends to go up as it does not have a dump tube but the fuel should not spray up with it running.

Yes, the 28 PCI carb sort of sprays the fuel upward if you pump it.
It's not a stream though, it's sort of a spray.

When the car is running, it sucks it down immediately.

Turns out that there was more wrong with the carb than just gas shooting out of the top. Once we got the fuel pump operating (it took sucking fuel up and out of pump/lines as though the pump needed to be primed in a way after sitting unused for so long) we couldn't get the fuel out of the bowl and into the carb. Pumped up and into the bowl just fine but somethin's is clogged or jammed up inside the carb and the car won't run.

Took the carb off and broke it down for a rebuild, the needle valve seemed to work OK, the pin moved up and down, but blowing through it took a LOT of pressure. The bowl filled, the valve shut off the fuel flow just fine but that was it. Not sure what to do next other than the rebuild which I really don't have any faith in, especially if the carb is clogged up enough to stop the fuel from leaving the bowl.

Blew air through all of the openings, used a fine wire on the jets and all, but still, I've never had any luck with rebuilding Solex carbs. They usually work or don't and that's despite it being so very simple.

Any tips on the rebuild would be a help, otherwise very to find an already rebuilt or operating 28 pci and try that. Getting kind of frustrating around these parts . . .

If you are asking about the 28 PCI, here is a cutaway diagram that shows how it works.

The emulsion tube is a press fit, be very careful removing it, as twisting can cause it to crack.

Might find some additional info in the Solex manual here in a PDF:

... when I got my '55 it would be difficult to start as if no gas in the carb - rebuilt it and now the carb drains (roughly) every 10 days - so, I start it once a week and always starts right up.
