Is there a park switch or a neutral safety switch somewhere?
I can get it to turn over in N but nothing in P. Not even a click.
My gear selector has P N 3 2 1. No D. Not sure that that matters but sharing.
Thank in advance! |

That's how it was designed. Starting in Park didn't come until about 1972 on the Type 3. See the end of the second paragraph in the Owners Manual:
Also, the first year or two of the automatic used the 3-2-1 lettering and not D-2-1. VW changed it to be less confusing to American drivers.

Thanks!
So the procedure would be stop and put the car in Park then shut off.
When you want to leave shift into neutral to start? LOL Strange design.
I am learning a bunch with this FI Automatic though. 😁
I also should have learned to look at the owners manual pages first. I did do a search before posting. Just didn't check the manual pages. |

To reduce stress on the transmission's internal parking pawl mechanism, when parking, I always pulled up the emergency brake handle fully, then shifted to Park, all with my foot on the brake pedal.
Same deal on starting... foot on brake, shift to N, then crank.
Drove a couple of valets nuts at fancy restaurants... even though I told them about it, they thought they knew better. I'd have to go get it myself, and I didn't tip them when they didn't listen! |

Make sure you have no vacuum leaks on any hose in the engine bay or under the car. Also keep the timing set dead-on. Make sure your kickdown switch is there and adjusted right. These things make it drive/shift better, and you can control shifting much better with the throttle... makes it fun to drive! |

Thanks for the tips.
My kick down switch is... well... Lets just say some of it is there.
I'll replace it though.
edit: and yes always the parking brake. Forgot to add that part. |

The main idea behind starting it in "N" was to make sure you kept the parking brake adjusted (like you would on a MT car). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
