My weekender has a bad front heater core. I'm using a bypass to get me through the summer. I'm the 3rd owner. I haven't been able to determine (yet) if the PO's knocked out the timing belt. I've been told by mechanics that they are separate jobs, but I've READ where people have written (here on "TheSamba") that if you do one, you should do the other.

Thoughts?

Seperate. One involves the engine compartment and the other, the passenger compartment. You can do one without interfering with the other.

There is no timing belt on that engine. It has timing chains instead. Maybe you mean the serpentine belt.

I'm just a few days away from doing the timing chains on our '01 Weekender. I'll take lots of pics.

For JMB3 - sorry I keep getting chains & belts mixed up as I have both a '95 EVC (belt) and 2001 Weekender (chain).

Regardless, sounds like the mechanics have been straight with me that they are in fact two separate jobs.
