Man, that is going to take a bit of metal work! I would probably put pipe insulation on, RTV it to the engine tin's, maybe cover it with aluminum foil.

The new channel should be the same for beetle or ghia. No differences between them in that area. VW had a knack for using the same parts across as much of their air cooled models as possible. A 67 and earlier bus also had the same hardware in that area. Since they both take the same engine tin and the same seal. I'd make one before I spent $400 on a new channel.

Gab also had a tool to straighten the channel as they get dented/beatup

Assuming that you are talking about the channel around the sides and back. We just did a repair on a Ghia that had a hacked engine compartment without any channel. After wrestling with our options, we came up with trying the "Mexican" slip on trunk seal for a beetle. It clipped on the perimeter of the engine opening and seems like it will do the job.

If you are talking about the seal around the front tin by the transaxle, it was also missing. I made some sheet metal tabs to secure it with self tapping screws through the stock seal and the firewall.

I give Gab a lot of praise for making this channel available.

When you consider the complexity of the sheet metal and the importance of having a quality seal....... $400 is a bargain!

Are you F*$&ing kidding me? Of all the things that we've seen you dissect & reuse and you try to justify $400 for the seal channel?!? You funny. Laughing

I cut one out of a Beetle donor car.

Then I burned off the undercoating off the back of the piece so I could see where the spot welds were.

After that, I cleaned it off with a wire brush.

Once cleaned, I ground the welds down with a die grinder.

And separated the channel from the scrap.

I then cleaned it up a bit...

I don't need one, if I did, I've a donor car here.

But if you've ever tried to make something like this and want to have it look darn near original, you will know the time that goes into it.

I made a portion of a convertible cable channel on a newer Beetle Convertible.
It came out great but the time investment was huge!

$400 isn't out of line for a "paste in" well made complex part. Our "made in
China" cheapo part mentality just doesn't apply here. Too bad it applies anywhere, we are buried in crappy low cost car parts today,

If things were different and Given the right circumstances, I just might purchase one......
