I am trying to decide between two 1995 vans. One has a 5 speed while the other is an automatic. Otherwise, they are exactly the same.

I know the 96-03 models are known for potential transmission problems. Any feedback on the auto transmissions in the 95 model?

All things being equal, what is better? I prefer the 5 speed but price wise the auto might be cheaper.

Oddly enough, they both have 65,000 miles on the odometer.

Thanks!

I find autos to be more convenient to drive daily, but the manuals do have a much better reputation for reliability in the T4 chassis.

The manual will give you less to no worry in the long run. You can also easily and inexpensively change out your 5th gear for a taller ratio for better freeway running.

Manual all day, I don't believe you plan on daily driving this van correct? Go with the sure thing.

Hi again,

Thanks for your replies/suggestions.

No, it will not be a daily driver; just for trips so that convenience factor of an automatic is not present.

I like the manual transmission because I can control the torque during acceleration as well as engine rpm (and car speed) when driving up and down steep roads.
