I have a engine case with this particular notch under the oil cooler. What is it for? I have also seen some cases with it filled in.

Reduces weight and material needed in casting the case.

Thanks Dan. I've used probably 1/2 dozen other cases in my day and never saw this 'Notch'. The one I have now is from a Super Beetle so its probably just a newer version. Case stamp starts with an "AK". |

I just cleaned a mud wasp nest out of one last week. And I'm not joking. _________________ 1973 standard, yellow, lowered, 3” narrowed front, 1600 blo-thru turbo w/single dell 15.4@86, so far

Hillarious and I believe you. I've found all sorts of weird things when taking down a long block. I think one guy on here found a small toy fireman's hat in his fuel pump! |

That hole is for inserting the silencer so the engine will be quiet. |

its not for that , if it was added for the casting it would be to relieve shrinkage or heat propagation in that area (used in a dense area deep inside of castings) that cant cool fast enough and causes long crystal formation cycles, resulting in hot tearing. but it looks like its got a mechanical purpos, i guess the casting could be hot enough there that that area needed it but its a lot of trouble to cover for a mistake.hmm... _________________ '88Doka JX td

They had a problem with porosity in that area.
Some cases from the late 60's, the oil passage from the cooler down between the cylinders is sleeved with an aluminum tube, but you don't see that in late 70's cases. Adding that relief might have been part of fighting that problem. |
