Long time lurker, first post... looking for feedback on what our Weekender might sell for? Or ideas of what to do with it
Driving down I-5 for a weekend escape and BOOM! Felt like I hit something and put the brakes on, except I didn't put the brakes on! Pull over and it won't move in any gear, won't roll in N either, smells like burning clutch/brakes, hmmm I can only assume the transmission is toast after 167,000 miles.
@shop rates I am looking at:
$6000-$11000 for the transmission (talked to three shops)
$1500-$2000 in engine work needed (cooling system and oil leaks)
$500 rear brakes
Maybe will need other things while its apart (timing chain?) too. Also it has a good couple of dents in the drivers side rear two unibody panels so its not in the best condition.
So sad day, its been a great van, lot's of memories, lot's of adventures but with 167,000 miles I am not inclined to put $12K plus into repairs. I know that an ambitious DIY'r can do a lot of this work for a lot less but I'm not the type to fix it myself anymore. Not sure I want to hassle with parting it out, just easier to sell it. I have no idea what it might be worth, what do you think?
Thanks

Blown transmission, unknown cooling system repairs, timing chain, brakes, and body repairs...maybe start with the low average of MV Weekenders for sale in the classified section and subtract $8K? _________________

Why not just make a custom set of wires with a Y splice in them. Then you could just run one distributor. |
I don't think electrickery works that way |

Well under 5k as described. Ping the guys here in Denver who refurb and rent out as they are a good bet.
The hard part for most sellers to stomach is the
“If you just put 12k in You will have a 25k van”
which doesn’t hunt on a non runner since you don’t know what else you need. _________________ .ssS! |

Realistically, you’d be lucky to get $1,500 unless it’s a poptop then maybe $2,500. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.
